Physical Biology of the Cell

Physical Biology of the Cell is a textbook for a first course in physical biology or biophysics for undergraduate or graduate students. It maps the huge and complex landscape of cell and molecular biology from the distinct perspective of physical biology. As a key organizing principle, the proximity of topics is based on the physical concepts that

Molecular Biology of the Cell

As the amount of information in biology expands dramatically, it becomes increasingly important for textbooks to distill the vast amount of scientific knowledge into concise principles and enduring concepts. As with previous editions, Molecular Biology of the Cell, Sixth Edition accomplishes this goal with clear writing and beautiful illustrations. The Sixth Edition has been extensively revised and updated with the latest research in the field of cell biology, and it provides an exceptional framework for teaching and learning. The entire illustration program has been greatly enhanced.Protein structures better illustrate structure–function relationships, icons are simpler and more consistent...

The Assembly and Interactions of MreB in the Maintenance of Cell Shape in Caulobacter Crescentus

This work focuses on the mechanism by which MreB contributes to the maintenance of cell shape in the gram-negative alpha-proteobacterium Caulobacter crescentus. The gene mreB encodes a protein that resembles actin, a eukaryotic cytoskeletal protein. Previously, it was shown that mreB is required to maintain a rod-like shape and localizes to a helical pattern near the cytoplasmic membrane. Here, we show that MreB is associated with regions of active growth in Caulobacter, as mutant strains that mislocalize MreB to the cell poles direct new growth at or near the poles. We present evidence to suggest that MreB contributes to the determination of proper length, width, and curvature through parti...

P2 Purinoceptors

Many different pathological conditions are currently under investigation as therapeutic targets of purines including cancer, cardiovascular conditions, behavioural disorders, inflammation, immunoregulation, and neuroendocrine function. This book draws together research on all aspects of P2 purinoceptors and discusses their use in different therapeutic areas.

Implementing the New Biology

As the second decade of the 21st century begins, the challenge of how to feed a growing world population and provide sustainable, affordable energy to fulfill daily needs, while also improving human health and protecting the environment, is clear and urgent. Increasing demand for food and energy is projected at the same time as the supply of land and other resources decrease. Increasing levels of greenhouse gasses alter climate, which, in turn, has life-changing implications for a broad range of plant and animal species. But promising developments are on the horizon-scientific discoveries and technologies that have the potential to contribute practical solutions to these seemingly intractabl...

Physical Biology: From Atoms To Medicine

This is an avant-garde book edited by Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail with contributions from eminent scientists including four Nobel prize winners. The perspectives of these world leaders in physics, chemistry, and biology define potential new frontiers at the interface of disciplines and including physical, systems, and synthetic biology. This book brings about the confluence of concepts and tools, and that of different disciplines, to address significant problems of our time: visualization; theory and computation for complexity; macromolecular function, protein folding and misfolding; and systems integration from cells to consciousness. The scope of tools is wide-ranging, spanning imaging, cry...
