McCartney. Surviving the perfect song

When The Beatles broke up for good in the British spring of 1970, Paul McCartney was just 27 years old. It was too early to begin a life of celebrity in retirement. He was haunted by the shadow of the immense aesthetic and cultural transformation that he himself had helped to forge. Faced with this crossroads, McCartney deployed - rightly and wrongly - different strategies to renew himself. Like no one before, journalist, musician and researcher Julio Martínez presents this journey without avoiding the contrast of light and shades. With the contradictions inherent to any human experience, which even those four musicians who changed the world could not escape. Never before has McCartney been...

Two men, they both have lungs and, through those organs, inhale the same air and exhale the same air. They breathe the same molecules, the same particles. Two men, they both have brains. Through one of those organs, one created an inextinguishable torrent of delicate, sensitive, and expressive melodies. He was capable of orchestrating symphonies, concerts, fantasies, overtures, marches, serenades for strings, suites, ballets, and operas. Only death could stop such a wealth of genius and creativity. The other brain, my own humble brain, clumsily listens to that celestial music and admires it. A woman and a man, they both have brains. Through one of those organs, one bravely proclaimed her doubts. She shamelessly shouted the love in her heart for everyone to hear such a truth. She claimed her right to find sense for her existence. Only death could stop such a passion and restlessness. The other brain, my own humble brain, clumsily reads her poems and shyly tries to translate them. This is the task that I have set for me in this book, a task as impossible as trying to describe music. I give you Madrina's secret life and her poetry.

The Tango Singer

Bruno Cadogan has flown from New York to Buenos Aires in search of the elusive and legendary Julio Martel, a tango singer whose voice has never been recorded yet is said to be so beautiful it is almost supernatural. Bruno is increasingly drawn to the mystery of Martel and his strange and evocative performances in a series of apparently arbitrary sites around the city. As Bruno tries to find Martel, he begins to untangle the story of the singer's life, and to believe that Martel's increasingly rare performances map a dark labyrinth of the city's past.

This bilingual collection of more than forty poems brings the work of one of the most distinctive writers in Spain today to English-speaking readers for the first time. Born in Madrid in 1955, Julio Martínez Mesanza is a significant figure among the generation of poets who came into prominence after the death of Franco. With subjects ranging from the Roman legions to D-Day, from the Babylonian exile to the haunted landscapes of domestic loss, these poems are engaged with the past and at the same time profoundly contemporary, illuminating the ethical issues at the heart of civilization, warfare, and daily life--Back cover.
