Requiem for an Army
Building on a strong foundation of primary sources, this unique study traces the role of East Germany's military (NVA) in the country's unification with West Germany. Utilizing interviews with and questionnaires from NVA officers, Herspring unravels the puzzle of the NVA's decision against using force to save the political system it was sworn to serve. The author also examines the integration of a select minority of officers and NCOs into the Bundeswehr. Illuminating the problems encountered by the Bundeswehr as it incorporated these individuals, Herspring constructs an ideal type of officer in one of the most politicized and tightly controlled of all communist militaries. His findings will be invaluable for all military-political specialists and for anyone interested in the process of transition from authoritarian/totalitarian to democratic systems.
Riemannian Geometry and Geometric Analysis
The present textbook is a somewhat expanded version of the material of a three-semester course I gave in Bochum. It attempts a synthesis of geometric and analytic methods in the study of Riemannian manifolds. In the first chapter, we introduce the basic geometric concepts, like dif ferentiable manifolds, tangent spaces, vector bundles, vector fields and one parameter groups of diffeomorphisms, Lie algebras and groups and in par ticular Riemannian metrics. New Directions in Hopf Algebras
Hopf algebras have important connections to quantum theory, Lie algebras, knot and braid theory, operator algebras and other areas of physics and mathematics. They have been intensely studied in the past; in particular, the solution of a number of conjectures of Kaplansky from the 1970s has led to progress on the classification of semisimple Hopf algebras and on the structure of pointed Hopf algebras. Among the topics covered are results toward the classification of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras (semisimple and non-semisimple), as well as what is known about the extension theory of Hopf algebras. Some papers consider Hopf versions of classical topics, such as the Brauer group, while others are closer to work in quantum groups. The book also explores the connections and applications of Hopf algebras to other fields.
