Popularność tego nowego gatunku medialnego ma wiele przyczyn. Wiele się też z niego możemy dowiedzieć - o konsumpcji, ciele, płci, tożsamości i władzy w ponowoczesnym społeczeństwie konsumentów. W społeczeństwie tym media masowe wytwarzają kulturę transformacji. Narzucają nam stały niepokój o nasz własny wygląd, stan posiadania, relacje z innymi i samorealizację. Wskazują, że konieczne jest nieustanne zmienianie siebie. Podpowiadają jak to zrobić, podkreślając przy tym fundamentalne znaczenie umiejętnych zakupów, stylizacji i dobrych medialnych wzorców. Same siebie kreują na najważniejsza instytucję kulturalną i ostatnią instancje w sprawach stylu, gustu i praktycznych spraw życia codziennego.
