The present book provides a detailed criticism of experientialist semantics, focusing both on philosophical issues connected with experientialism and on cognitive approaches to metaphor and metonymy. Particular emphasis is placed on the works of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, but other cognitivists are also taken into consideration. Verena Haser proposes a new approach to the distinction between metaphor and metonymy, which contrasts with familiar cognitivist models, but also builds on some insights gained in cognitivist research. She also offers an account of metaphorical transfer which dispenses with the notion of conceptual metaphors in the sense of Lakoff and Johnson. She argues that co...
The author, Matthias Perner (M.A.), was born in Hannover (Germany) and studied linguistics, politics and sociology. He focused on communicational aspects of spoken language and at the same time found himself teaching English and German. It was then that his interest in lexicology, semantics and humour research was aroused and he started collecting data for the present work. Its structural taxonomy and clear analysis of linguistic joke mechanisms and their semantic and textlinguistic formation combines Greimas' approach to structural semantics with modern textlinguistic theories, empirical research and detailed aspects of lexicological semantics. In combination with a very clear and detailed explanation of the concepts involved plus a vast corpus of jokes this book presents a innovative and concise look at jokes both for linguists and those who are interested in humorous aspects of language.

From the outset, this book has evoked strong responses. Its central claim is that given a comprehensive theory of inferential communication, there is no need for a special theory of translation. This has been praised by some as "wise and right" (Dell Hymes) and condemned by others as "astonishing, not to say perverse" (Kirsten Malmkjaer). Gutt's call to move from semiotics to an inferential paradigm of communication remains a challenge for many. The debate continues and so does the demand for the book, resulting in this second edition. There is a 'Postscript' entitled 'A decade later', where the author addresses peer criticism, especially from those involved in the movement of 'translation studies', and attempts to bring out more clearly the unique mandate of translation. New perspectives, such as authenticity, are also introduced. Marginal notes, some tongue-in-cheek, liven up the discussion and new references ensure its currency.
