This book deals with mathematical problems arising in the context of meteorological modelling. It gathers and presents some of the most interesting and important issues from the interaction of mathematics and meteorology. It is unique in that it features contributions on topics like data assimilation, ensemble prediction, numerical methods, and transport modelling, from both mathematical and meteorological perspectives. The derivation and solution of all kinds of numerical prediction models require the application of results from various mathematical fields. The present volume is divided into three parts, moving from mathematical and numerical problems through air quality modelling, to advan...

Conjugate Gradient Algorithms and Finite Element Methods

The position taken in this collection of pedagogically written essays is that conjugate gradient algorithms and finite element methods complement each other extremely well. Via their combinations practitioners have been able to solve complicated, direct and inverse, multidemensional problems modeled by ordinary or partial differential equations and inequalities, not necessarily linear, optimal control and optimal design being part of these problems. The aim of this book is to present both methods in the context of complicated problems modeled by linear and nonlinear partial differential equations, to provide an in-depth discussion on their implementation aspects. The authors show that conjugate gradient methods and finite element methods apply to the solution of real-life problems. They address graduate students as well as experts in scientific computing.

Numerical Analysis and Its Applications

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Numerical Analysis and Its Applications, NAA 2008, held in Lozenetz, Bulgaria in June 2008. The 61 revised full papers presented together with 13 invited papers were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. The papers address all current aspects of numerical analysis and discuss a wide range of problems concerning recent achievements in physics, chemistry, engineering, and economics. A special focus is given to numerical approximation and computational geometry, numerical linear algebra and numerical solution of transcendental equations, numerical methods for differential equations, numerical modeling, and high performance scientific computing.

Sobolev Gradients and Differential Equations

A Sobolev gradient of a real-valued functional on a Hilbert space is a gradient of that functional taken relative to an underlying Sobolev norm. This book shows how descent methods using such gradients allow a unified treatment of a wide variety of problems in differential equations. For discrete versions of partial differential equations, corresponding Sobolev gradients are seen to be vastly more efficient than ordinary gradients. In fact, descent methods with these gradients generally scale linearly with the number of grid points, in sharp contrast with the use of ordinary gradients. Aside from the first edition of this work, this is the only known account of Sobolev gradients in book form...
