Information Dissemination in Currency Crises
As the complexity of financial markets keeps growing, so does the need to understand the decision-making and the coordination of the exsuing actions in the marketplace. In particular, the disclosure of information to market participants and its impact on the market outcome mertis attention. This study analyses the role of private and public information in currency crises. Calls for increased dissemination of economic and policy-related information by central banks notwithstanding, the study shows that transparency is not generally conductive to preventing speculative attacks in fixed exchange-rate regimes. Rather, the role of private and public information in the market-place depencs critically on the prevailing market sentiment. The study also highlights the import of market transparency design in an environment that allows for herding and market leadership of individual speculators.

Jens Maeße geht im vorliegenden Band der Frage nach, wie die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung von Ökonomischen Expertentum in Politik, Medien und Wirtschaft zu erklären ist, indem er die akademische Welt von Ökonominnen und Ökonomen in den Blick nimmt. Mit einer diskursanalytischen Theorie sozialer Macht werden die sozialen und diskursiven Prozesse beobachtet, die einen Elitekult in der akademischen Welt der Volkswirtschaftslehre hervorbringen. Die Studie beschreibt und untersucht jedoch nicht nur die Prozesse und Dynamiken der Herausbildung von „Eliteökonomen“, sie fragt auch nach den gesellschaftlichen Ursachen und Hintergründen des Elitismus. Damit wird erstmals eine systematische diskurssoziologische Analyse darüber vorgelegt, wie es zur Elitenbildung in der deutschsprachigen Volkswirtschaftslehre und zum Aufbau der gesellschaftlichen Deutungshoheit einer bestimmten ökonomischen Richtung gekommen ist. Der Elitismus in der VWL, so die These des Buches, ist allerdings nicht nur auf wissenschaftsinterne Prozesse zurückzuführen. Er ist vielmehr der Effekt gesellschaftlicher Legitimitätsbedürfnisse, die im Zuge von Globalisierung und Bildungsexpansion entstanden sind.
