The Handbook of Salutogenesis

This open access book is a thorough update and expansion of the 2017 edition of The Handbook of Salutogenesis, responding to the rapidly growing salutogenesis research and application arena. Revised and updated from the first edition are background and historical chapters that trace the development of the salutogenic model of health and flesh out the central concepts, most notably generalized resistance resources and the sense of coherence that differentiate salutogenesis from pathogenesis. From there, experts describe a range of real-world applications within and outside health contexts. Many new chapters emphasize intervention research findings. Readers will find numerous practical example...

Sarcopenia

Frailty: Pathophysiology, Phenotype and Patient Care

The demographic shift in the average age of the population worldwide calls for careful attention to the nutritional and health needs of the elderly. Frailty has been associated with increased disability, postsurgical complications and increased mortality; in a frail state, older adults are at greater risk for adverse outcomes, including falls and admissions to hospital and nursing homes. Despite the strong associations between frailty and subsequent poor outcomes, limited attention to this common geriatric condition has been paid in clinical settings. Emerging evidence suggests that both behavioral (nutrition and physical activity) and pharmacologic interventions may be effective in the treatment and prevention of the frailty syndrome. The papers in this book address our current understanding of the biological basis, clinical presentation and therapeutic interventions that target frailty. They highlight the transitional nature of research on the frailty syndrome and identified key unmet needs and areas for future investigation in this expanding field.

Optimizing Pharmacotherapy in Older Patients

This book summarizes the broad and rapidly evolving field of geriatric pharmacotherapy, which is becoming increasingly relevant for practicing physicians who care and prescribe medications for older patients. Around the globe, ageing populations are associated with an increased prevalence of chronic diseases. Older adults are often affected by multimorbidity, i.e., suffer from more than one chronic disease. The main consequence of multimorbidity is polypharmacy, which is commonly defined as the regular use of five or more medicines. Polypharmacy has now reached epidemic proportions in our societies, and is associated with an increased risk of drug-drug interactions, drug-disease interactions and adverse drug reactions. The management of polypharmacy in older patients with complex multimorbidity poses several challenges and needs to be based on specific knowledge and prescribing expertise. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive update on the field, and to share the expertise needed to optimize the management of pharmacotherapy in older patients.

Nutrition and Aging

Humanity is aging. In the last century, life expectancy has increased by as much as 25 years, the greatest increase in 5’000 years of history. As a consequence the elderly constitute today the fastest growing segment of the world’s population. This new situation creates many social problems and challenges to health care which both the developed as well as the developing countries will have to cope with. The present publication shows that scientific progress has reached a level where nutritional interventions may play a decisive part in the prevention of degenerative conditions of age, improvement of quality of life and impact on health care burden and resources. Topics deal with such dif...

In this book, leading authors in the field discuss the habitats of tomorrow. These habitats will be connected through autonomous and assistive systems, turning habitats into health resorts. This book discusses how assistance technologies enable a smooth transition from comfortable health support to medical or nursing care. The contributions have been chosen and invited at the 9th AAL congress, Frankfurt.
