The Rise of National Socialism and the Working Classes in Weimar Germany

Before seizing power the Nazi movement assembled an exceptionally broad social coalition of activists and supporters. Many were working class, but there remains considerable disagreement over the precise size and structure of this constituency and still more over its ideology and politics. An indispensable work for scholars of interwar Germany and Nazism in general.

Germany and the Confessional Divide

Germany and the Confessional Divide

From German unification in 1871 through the early 1960s, confessional tensions between Catholics and Protestants were a source of deep division in German society. Engaging this period of historic strife, Germany and the Confessional Divide focuses on three traumatic episodes: the Kulturkampf waged against the Catholic Church in the 1870s, the collapse of the Hohenzollern monarchy and state-supported Protestantism after World War I, and the Nazi persecution of the churches. It argues that memories of these traumatic experiences regularly reignited confessional tensions. Only as German society became increasingly secular did these memories fade and tensions ease.

In addition to the election of a new Bundestag in October, there was a presidential election, elections to the European Parliament and elections for seven Länder parliaments. This book provides a set of analyses of those elections, with emphasis on the Bundestag election.

Germany's New Politics

Four years after unification, in the so called 'super election year' of 1994, there were no less than nineteen elections in Germany, culminating in the Bundestag vote on October 16th. This book analyzes the elections, which reveal the state of German unity and the interplay of new forces in post-Cold War Europe, placing them in the wider context of political and economic developments in Germany in the 1990s. In the years preceding publication of this book in 1986 much progress was made in identifying the social sources of support for Hitler’s NSDAP and in determining the tactics employed by the party to mobilise its constituency at grass roots level. It has emerged that the Nazi’s roots were far more diverse than previously assumed, extending beyond the lower middle class to encompass both the affluent bourgeoisie and the working class. This book collects together original studies which represent a distillation of some of the contemporaneous research.
