Interferons documents the proceedings of a major international conference on Chemistry and Biology of Interferons: Relationship to Therapeutics held at Squaw Valley, California, in March 1982. The meeting was one of the 1982 UCLA Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology organized through the Molecular Biology Institute of the University of California at Los Angeles. The book is organized into four parts. Part I presents papers on recombinant DNA production of interferon. It includes studies on the synthesis of human immune interferon in E. coli and monkey cells; the expression of human ß interferon gene in heterologous cells; and the molecular activities of recombinant and hybrid leukocyt...
" . . . the motto for the therapeutics of the future will have to be de sedibus et causis pharmacorum. " P. EHRLICH, 1909 Exciting events in the basic disciplines of virology, immunology, and pharmacology continue to advance the understanding of the pathogenesis and control of virus diseases. At the same time, the rational development of antiviral agents is attracting, to an increasing extent, the interest of workers in other disciplines. Improvements in technology facilitate the definition of potential target sites for antiviral intervention and unmask new viral and host genes. The outcome is a further steady development of new antiviral agents which approach the "magic bullets" first propo...
First multi-year cumulation covers six years: 1965-70.
Where do you begin to look for a recent, authoritative article on the diagnosis or management of a particular malignancy? The few general oncology textbooks are generally out of date. Single papers in specialized journals are informative but seldom comprehensive; these are more often preliminary reports on a very limited number of patients. Certain general journals frequently publish good indepth reviews of cancer topics, and published symposium lectures are often the best overviews available. Unfor tunately, these reviews and supplements appear sporadically, and the reader can never be sure when a topic of special interest will be covered. Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of author...

Now for the first time, one comprehensive book summarizes and analyzes the numerous scientific papers and reviews covering selected aspects of the structure, biological activities, and clinical effects of immune interferon, also known as interferon-gamma(IFN-gamma). Interferon-gamma is a natural immune booster which has been synthesized and widely used in clinical cases ranging from infectious diseases to cancer, as well as various metabolic disorders. Having developed their own brand of interferon-gamma, the authors are well known in the scientific community. In Immune Interferon: Properties and Clinical Applications, they bring together the extensive findings from twenty years of research since the discovery of the drug. Focusing on the drug itself, and not particular brands, the book presents data on the properties of interferon-gamma, experimental data on its effects, and its clinical applications.
The production of interferon requires human cells and proper inducing agents. Present production facilities are limited. The quantities of interferon needed for clinical trials and eventual routine demand the development of new techniques in the growth and handling of cells and inducers. Safety is an important consideration in the production of biological products, and interferon is no exception. All components of the system and the final product must satisfy stringent safety standards. The participants of the workshop dealt with all of the above problems on a practical level. The next few years will see advances in the technology of production of interferon. The future will also see more widespread investigation of the antiviral and antitumor roles of interferon.
