The Pharmacology of Functional, Biochemical, and Recombinant Receptor Systems

This, the 148th volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology series, focuses on the very core of pharmacology, namely receptor theory. It is fitting that the originator of receptor pharmacology, A. J. CLARK, authored the fourth volume of this series 63 years ago. In that volume CLARK further developed his version of receptor theory first described four years earlier in his classic book The Mode of Action of Drugs. An examination of the topics covered in volume 4 reveals a striking similarity to the topics covered in this present volume; pharmacologists today are still as interested in unlocking the secrets of dose-response relationships to reveal the biological and che mical basis of ...

Intestinal Transport

The aim of this symposium was to provide a framework for fruitful discussion on intestinal transport, not only for advanced scientists but also for younger people starting in this field of research. Invited lectures, communications and poster presentations were focused on four central themes, all treating the prop erties of the sole intestinal epithelium, deliberately leaving aside problems dealing with more integrative functions of the whole intestine. The importance of motility or blood circulation, for instance, is certainly capital in the overall intestinal function, but these aspects by themselves deserve another meeting. This volume has compiled the manuscripts of the invited lectures ...

This new book presents a variety of important research on functional foods—foods that have another role related to disease prevention or health. The first section of the book includes chapters on the complicated relationships between nutrition, physical and mental health, and disease. Section two focuses on the connection between health science and food, and presents a number of case studies on the possible uses of functional foods. The book discusses important methods for nutritional interventions in relation to diseases such as obesity and other prominent health concerns in modern society. Topics include: Nutrigenetics and metabolic diseases Nutrition intervention strategies to improve health Nutrition consumption timing around exercise sessions Nutritional therapies for mental disorders Health benefits of particular foods, such as eggs, milk, cereal, garlic, cinnamon, nuts, blueberries, etc. Mineral- and protein-enriched foods

Circular Array-Based Radio Frequency OAM Communications

This book presents the modeling and transmission theory of RF OAM communications. The book features the UCA-based RF point-to-point OAM communication system, the UCA-based RF point-to-multipoint OAM wireless backhaul network, the HCCL structure for long-distance OAM transmissions, and the UCA-based joint OAM RadCom scheme. For the UCA-based RF point-to-point OAM communication system, a 2-D ESPRIT-based distance and AoA estimation method is first introduced, followed by an OAM reception scheme including the hybrid mechanical and electronic beam steering with the estimated AoA and the amplitude detection with the estimated distance. The proposed RF OAM communication scheme is extended to the R...

Mineral Tolerance of Animals

Mineral Tolerance of Animals

Excess minerals in the diet and water of animals can have an adverse effect on animal health, consumers, and the environment. Preventing unsafe mineral exposure is a fundamental part of animal nutrition and management. At the request of the Food and Drug Administration, the National Academies convened a committee to make recommendations on animal tolerances and toxic dietary levels, updating a 1980 report on mineral tolerance in domestic animals. Based on a review of current scientific data and information, the report sets a "maximum tolerable level" (MTL) for each mineral as it applies to the diets of farm animals, poultry, and fish. The report includes an analysis of the effects of toxic levels in animal diets, and it identifies elements that pose potential human health concerns. The report recommends research that includes a better characterization of animal exposure to minerals through feedstuffs; a better understanding of the relationship between mineral concentrations in feed and water and the levels in consumer products such as meat, milk, and eggs; and more research on the maximum tolerable level of minerals for aquatic and companion animals.

Herbicide Resistance in Weeds and Crops

Herbicides are the dominant technology and the most effective weed control tools ever developed that are used for the control of weeds that infest crops. Over the last several decades, in situations of intense herbicide usage, there have been many examples of the evolution of weed populations resistant to herbicides. Weed adaptations to management tactics, including biochemical mimicry in the form of evolved resistance to the herbicides used for weed control, have increased rapidly throughout agriculture and now threaten global food security. Nowadays, expended space of research activities remains to focus on the herbicide resistance to weeds and crops. The authors of Herbicide Resistance in Weeds and Crops cover various issues regarding the present relevant research.
