In March 2011, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental activist group, released a questionable report alleging that chemical exposures throughout the country have led to numerous "disease clusters." The group called for far-reaching reforms that would place huge financial burdens on chemical manufacturers and American taxpayers. Accelerated job loss and restrictions or bans on safe and usefulproducts would be the consequences of the misguided concern generated by this (and similar) scientifically flawed warnings. In response, the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH), basing our analysis on well established principles of scientific investigation, critically evaluated the NRDC's purported disease clusters and assessed the depth of the evidence-based support for these claims. This publication is a case-by-case investigation of each of the NRDC's claims. We explain why, with few exceptions, their allegationshave no scientific basis and fly in the face of the conclusions reached by objective governmental public health agencies.

The Intervertebral Disc

The intervertebral disc is a complex structure that separates opposing vertebrae, permits a wide range of motion, and accommodates high biomechanical forces. Disc degeneration leads to a loss of function and is often associated with excruciating pain. Written by leading scientists and clinicians, the first part of the book provides a review of the basic biology of the disc in health and disease. The second part considers strategies to mitigate the effects of disc degeneration and discusses the possibility of engineering replacement tissues. The final section is devoted to approaches to model normal development and elucidate the pathogenesis of degenerative disc disease using animal, organ and cell culture techniques. The book bridges the gap between the basic and clinical sciences; the target audience includes basic scientists, orthopaedists and neurologists, while at the same time appealing to the needs of graduate students, medical students, interns and fellows.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease generating joint pain and damage in which inflammation plays a major role. RA joints are inflamed and stiff. Symptoms include joint swelling and warmth causing fatigue affecting life’s health-related quality. Still, there are many other medical conditions that can also be associated with your symptoms and signs. This book is not a substitute for a diagnosis from a healthcare provider. Yet, understanding your symptoms and signs and educating yourself about health conditions is important and can contribute to having the healthiest possible life. Herein, Professor Hechmi Toumi offers an edited volume with detailed new information on RA pathogenesis and explains both approaches and treatment options: recent clinical research and traditional methods.
