Art of Generalship

Art of Generalship

History has thrilling accounts of brilliant Generals leading small armies to defeat huge forces of their opponents. Better the Generalship, greater the victories. The Indian Army too has produced many great Generals, who have defeated evil designs of adversaries. Yet they have produced none like Rommel, Manstein, Model, or even like our old warriors Maharana Pratap, Hari Singh Nalwa, or Zorawar Singh. India can and must produce Generals of that calibre; Generals who don’t just defend territory or restore status quo, but those who annihilate aggressors, to teach memorable lessons to adversaries who transgress, who initiate punitive actions for conventional and nuclear deterrence to be effective. To produce Generals of such calibre, the first step is to understand what is good Generalship. Then study Generalship in previous conflicts to appreciate achievements and also learn lessons from opportunities missed. Only then can the Armed Forces institute measures to improve the quality of Generalship for the future. This book is written to facilitate such study, in that order.

Rice is a widely consumed crop around the world that has tremendous importance and is cultivated almost everywhere except Antarctica. However, various biotic and abiotic stresses have a negative effect on rice cultivation, seriously reducing its yield. This volume examines the bacterial and fungal pathogens that cause rice diseases and explores how to manage these diseases. It covers the economic and environmental impact of rice fungal diseases on global food security and proceeds to delve into diagnostic methods for rice fungal pathogen detection and discusses current strategic and applied biotechnological methods for the effective management of rice fungal diseases.

Malignant Hyperthermia

Malignant Hyperthermia

In susceptible individuals, malignant hyperthermia (MH) can be triggered by various anesthetics during surgery. First described in 1960, research since then has concentrated on reducing the very high mortality rate associated with MH. Although significant progress in treatment has been made with the introduction of dantrolene sodium in 1979, many questions remain unanswered. Following on the results of more than 30 years of investigative efforts, the Third International Symposium on MH was held in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1994, immediately before the Seventh International Workshop on MH. Specialists in the field discussed the most up-to-date findings from the point of view of clinical classification, history, and incidence based on the evidence of epidemiology, diagnostic muscle testing, genetics, and biochemistry. These proceedings of the symposium present important keys to understanding the mechanism of MH and related syndromes at the genetic level and include procedures for the monitoring and care of patients. This volume will be invaluable not only for surgeons and anesthesiologists but also for physiologists and researchers.

Genome Instability in Cancer Development

Research over the past decades has firmly established the genetic basis of cancer. In particular, studies on animal tumour viruses and chromosome rearrangements in human tumours have concurred to identify so-called ‘proto-oncogenes’ and ‘tumour suppressor genes’, whose deregulation promotes carcinogenesis. These important findings not only explain the occurrence of certain hereditary tumours, but they also set the stage for the development of anti-cancer drugs that specifically target activated oncogenes. However, in spite of tremendous progress towards the elucidation of key signalling pathways involved in carcinogenesis, most cancers continue to elude currently available therapies....

DNA Repair and Mutagenesis

An essential resource for all scientists researching cellular responses to DNA damage. • Introduces important new material reflective of the major changes and developments that have occurred in the field over the last decade. • Discussed the field within a strong historical framework, and all aspects of biological responses to DNA damage are detailed. • Provides information on covering sources and consequences of DNA damage; correcting altered bases in DNA: DNA repair; DNA damage tolerance and mutagenesis; regulatory responses to DNA damage in eukaryotes; and disease states associated with defective biological responses to DNA damage.
