How did Bismarck, Germany’s greatest nineteenth century leader, extend and maintain his power? This new Profile examines his strengths as statesman and all the facets of his political career. His many direct achievements included the unification of Germany and the expansion of Prussia. In short, he was the architect of Germany’s change from cultural region to political nation. In the end he combined egotism and brilliance exceptionally, yet it was still not enough to save him from dismissal by William II.

From Immunotherapy of Cancer to the Discovery of Kidney Cancer Genes

I had the good fortune to work at the National Cancer Institute from 1965 to 2005. The National Cancer Institute provided an environment that permitted my curiosity to flourish. Colleagues, particularly Marston Linehan, were essential to performance of the work. The work described in this manuscript was performed during a period of rapid advances in genetics. I was able to apply my clinical training and new genetic tools to study human kidney cancer. With the support of the National Cancer Institute, I was able to canvas physicians throughout the United States and Canada for referrals of families with multiple members affected with renal cancer. I was able to visit these families in their communities and determine the clinical and genetic features of their hereditary susceptibility to renal cancer, and to bring these families to Bethesda for comprehensive examinations. Using DNA analytic tools, we were able to identify several tumor suppressor genes that play major roles in the pathogenesis of human renal carcinoma thus opening up new fields for biochemical research into the pathogenesis of human renal carcinoma.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Social Computing, Behavioral-Cultural Modeling, and Prediction, SBP 2015, held in Washington, DC, USA, in March/April 2015. The 24 full papers presented together with 36 poster papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 118 submissions. The goal of the conference was to advance our understanding of human behavior through the development and application of mathematical, computational, statistical, simulation, predictive and other models that provide fundamental insights into factors contributing to human socio-cultural dynamics. The topical areas addressed by the papers are social and behavioral sciences, health sciences, engineering, computer and information science.

Role of Lipid Excipients in Modifying Oral and Parenteral Drug Delivery

This comprehensive resource covers the fundamentals, formulation, and biopharmaceutical issues of lipid-based drug delivery. It presents the principles of lipid absorption and covers formulation issues, such as dissolution testing and stability testing, and physiological and biopharmaceutical issues, including the role of specific enzymes, the evaluation of transport systems in the body, and the mechanisms governing the transport of water-insoluble drugs.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Adolescents

Grounded in extensive research and clinical experience, this manual provides a complete guide to interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed adolescents (IPT-A). IPT-A is an evidence-based brief intervention designed to meet the specific developmental needs of teenagers. Clinicians learn how to educate adolescents and their families about depression, work with associated relationship difficulties, and help clients manage their symptoms while developing more effective communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills. The book includes illustrative clinical vignettes, an extended case example, and information on the model's conceptual and empirical underpinnings. Helpful session checklists and sample assessment tools are featured in the appendices.

Handbook of Big Data Analytics and Forensics

This handbook discusses challenges and limitations in existing solutions, and presents state-of-the-art advances from both academia and industry, in big data analytics and digital forensics. The second chapter comprehensively reviews IoT security, privacy, and forensics literature, focusing on IoT and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The authors propose a deep learning-based approach to process cloud’s log data and mitigate enumeration attacks in the third chapter. The fourth chapter proposes a robust fuzzy learning model to protect IT-based infrastructure against advanced persistent threat (APT) campaigns. Advanced and fair clustering approach for industrial data, which is capable of trai...

Identification of Pathogenic Social Media Accounts

This book sheds light on the challenges facing social media in combating malicious accounts, and aims to introduce current practices to address the challenges. It further provides an in-depth investigation regarding characteristics of “Pathogenic Social Media (PSM),”by focusing on how they differ from other social bots (e.g., trolls, sybils and cyborgs) and normal users as well as how PSMs communicate to achieve their malicious goals. This book leverages sophisticated data mining and machine learning techniques for early identification of PSMs, using the relevant information produced by these bad actors. It also presents proactive intelligence with a multidisciplinary approach that combi...
