The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the structure theory of higher dimensional algebraic varieties by studying the geometry of curves, especially rational curves, on varieties. The main applications are in the study of Fano varieties and of related varieties with lots of rational curves on them. This Ergebnisse volume provides the first systematic introduction to this field of study. The book contains a large number of examples and exercises which serve to illustrate the range of the methods and also lead to many open questions of current research.
At long last, the first book to cover all important areas of interferon science in one volume. Top scientists, including many pioneers in the field, highlight the role of interferons as research tools and as therapeutic agents in clinical applications. Edited by an experienced interferonologist, chapters include discussions of interferon genes, Type I, II and III IFNs, as well as their induction, production and purification, receptors actions, measuring IFN activities and anti-IFN antibodies, as well as the evolution of viral defense mechanisms. For immunologists, cancer researchers, medicinal chemists, cell biologists, developmental biologists and the pharmaceutical industry.
Summarizing molecular aspects, diagnostic as well as therapeutic issues, this book is the very first and most comprehensive on hereditary aspects of tumor diseases. All the contributors have been made fellows of the Ingrid zu Solms Foundation due to their outstanding achievements in scientific research, and they discuss here the latest aspects in the diagnosis, disease management, and treatment of hereditary tumor diseases and syndromes. A must-have ready reference for medical and biology students, MDs, PhDs, physicians, and researchers.
The complex information systems which have evolved in recent decades rely on robust and coherent representations in order to function. Such representations and associated reasoning techniques constitute the modern discipline of formal ontology, which is now applied to fields such as artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, bioinformatics, GIS, conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering, information retrieval, and the semantic web. Ontologies are increasingly employed in a number of complex real-world application domains. For instance, in biology and medicine, more and more principle-based ontologies are being developed for the description of biological and biomedical phenomena. To...
One of the most interesting issues in immunology is how the innate and adaptive branches of the immune system cooperate in vertebrate organisms to respond and destroy invading microorganisms without destroying self-tissues. More than 20 years ago, Charles Janeway proposed the innate immune recognition theory [1]. He hypothesized the existence of innate receptors (Pattern recognition receptors, PRRs) that, by recognizing molecular structures associated to pathogens (PAMPs) and being expressed by antigen presenting cells (APCs) and epithelial cells, could alert the immune system to the presence of a pathogen, making it possible to mount an immediate inflammatory response. Moreover, by transduc...
In today's world, food security is an important issue. Food shortages push prices up, impacting upon the health and well-being of hundreds of millions of rural poor across the globe. One way to increase food security is to decrease the amount of yield lost to pests. The Pesticide Encyclopedia provides a comprehensive overview of the fight against pests, covering chemical pesticides, biocontrol agents and biopesticides. It also covers interrelated topics such as pesticide toxicity, legislation and regulation, handling, storage and safety aspects, IPM techniques, resistance management, interaction of pesticides with soil and the environment. An important reference for policy makers, advisers and students and researchers of crop science, this book also includes useful notes on commonly known plant diseases and pests.
Artificial Intelligence in health care has become one of the best assisting techniques for clinicians in proper diagnosis and surgery. In biomedical applications, artificial intelligence algorithms are explored for bio-signals such as electrocardiogram (ECG/ EKG), electrooculogram (EOG), electromyogram (EMG), electroencephalogram (EEG), blood pressure, heart rate, nerve conduction, etc., and for bio-imaging modalities, such as Computed Tomography (CT), Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), etc. Advancements in Artificial intelligence and big data has increased the development of innovative medical devices in health care applications. Recent Advances in Artif...
The selected contributions in this volume originated at the Sundance conference, which was devoted to discussions of current work in the area of free resolutions. The papers include new research, not otherwise published, and expositions that develop current problems likely to influence future developments in the field.
