The Survivors

First published in 1980, The Survivors is a detailed and original study of the experiences of homeless young people in central London. The book is based on in-depth interviews with 107 ‘newcomers’, who were selected at two nightshelters and a government reception centre. Their views and experiences are recorded, their backgrounds described and their reasons for coming to London examined. We learn how they coped with the interventions of both those who want to hinder and those who want to help, and how in general they survived – and sometimes even enjoyed themselves – in an extreme environment. The authors also examine the ways in which the various helping agencies view the ‘problem’. They claim that the agencies tend to present a pessimistic picture – one that understates the resilience and resourcefulness of these young people, dismisses their spirit of their adventure, and concentrates almost exclusively on the dangers, difficulties and hardships. This book will be of interest to students of sociology, urban studies, public policy and economics.

When Caregivers Kill

Each year in the U.S. hundreds of children under the age of ten are killed by parents, relatives, or other caregivers. In recent years, families have become less dependent on kinship and neighborhood relationships, so they may become nearly invisible to those who might otherwise be involved in their activities. Because of this isolation, danger to children often does not become visible to the public until the child is injured or, worse, dead. This book offers an overview of the various caregivers involved in child homicide. It covers murders committed by mothers, fathers, babysitters, and others and examines the common circumstances that lead to such violence. Using cases throughout, the authors reveal the extent and nature of child homicide in chilling detail. Readers will come away from the book with a greater understanding of the problem_the triggers that lead to child homicide, the motives and means, what killers have in common, and how to prevent and address child homicide.

Police Women

  • Categories: Law

It is often said that a woman must do a job twice as well as a man in order to get half the credit. This is particularly true of women in law enforcement. Women have been involved in various forms of policing for the last 100 years, but it wasn't until the Equal Employment Act of 1970 that women could move from the job of meter maids to patrol and detective work. Yet less than 1% of all top-level cops are women, and there remain significant obstacles in the career paths of women in the force. This book looks at the history of women police officers and provides first-hand accounts of women at every level, including those who drop out. It addresses discrimination, competition, lack of mentorin...

Scales of Justice

In the a late October night, two shots ring out when a man answers his door, and the shooter quickly drives away. Colorado Springs detectives, Randall Hunter and James Douglass, assume it's a one-time incident until there is another similar murder . . . and then another. Without any leads to the perpetrator, named'the "front-door killer" by the detectives, all they can do is sit and wait for the next victim. SCALES of JUSTICE is the fourteenth book co-authored by Sandra Wells and Betty Alt. Wells has a Ph.D. from Colorado State University in Fort Collins while Alt has an M.A. from Northeast Missouri State University. Both authors have taught at the university level and now enjoy the "fascinating hobby" of writing books.

Deep in that dismal swamp dwelt an abysmal Thing, a monstrous being of ooze, gloating in its perfume of cadavers...ExcerptThe last rays of an unseen sun had faded until the wooded swamp was a fogshrouded monochrome of somber shadows and swirling vapors. The dank chill of slime-wet air seeped coldly through the darkening gray mists. Larry Kent shivered and turned the collar of his coat higher around his neck. Kent's deeply tanned face was grimly intent as he tried vainly to peer ahead through the murky gloom. Hidden cells deep within his sensitive brain quivered to the stimulus of a familiar and eerie warning. Somewhere in that chill curtain of twilight fog, Fear lurked, naked and abysmal! Larry Kent had spent too many years in the dark corners of the world to ever be mistaken in that weirdly menacing aura of incarnate terror. He had felt it in the cold stone cells of North China where shuddering coolies waited wretchedly for dawn and the headsman's sword. He had sensed it in the sweating midnight of an African jungle kraal where close-packed blacks groveled in abject fear as Om-Jok, the Devil-God, stalked thundering through the night.
