With the Pacing of a Thriller, a Veteran Journalist’s Account of the Terrorist behind the Mumbai Attacks and a Planned Attack in Europe David Headley, the American-Pakistani also known as Daood Gilani, lived a double life. One day he would stroll through Central Park in his tailored Armani suit as a true New Yorker, and the next he would browse in the bazaar in Lahore wearing traditional Pakistani clothes. One day he would drink champagne at the most extravagant clubs; on another he would prostrate himself in prayer in remote Pakistan and pledge fidelity to Allah. Born in 1960, the son of an American mother and Pakistani father, with one blue eye and one brown, Headley grew up between East...
This volume contains results gained from the EU-funded 6th Framework project ADIGMA (Adaptive Higher-order Variational Methods for Aerodynamic Applications in Industry). The goal of ADIGMA was the development and utilization of innovative adaptive higher-order methods for the compressible flow equations enabling reliable, mesh independent numerical solutions for large-scale aerodynamic applications in aircraft industry. The ADIGMA consortium was comprised of 22 organizations which included the main European aircraft manufacturers, the major European research establishments and several universities, all with well proven expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The book presents an introduction to the project, exhibits partners’ methods and approaches and provides a critical assessment of the newly developed methods for industrial aerodynamic applications. The best numerical strategies for integration as major building blocks for the next generation of industrial flow solvers are identified.
The incredible story of David Headley, the Pakistani-American mastermind behind the 26/11 attacks The morning of November 26, 2008 dawned bright on Mumbai, but the day would colour the city red before ending on a horrifying note. Ten members of the Islamist militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba carried out a series of 12 coordinated shootings and bombings across the city lasting four days, killing 166 people and injuring 208. Born Daood Gilani, David Headley lived a sinister double life. One day he would stroll through Central Park in his tailored Armani suit as a true New Yorker; the next day would see him browsing the bazaar in Lahore wearing traditional Pakistani clothes. With one blue eye and o...
"This collection is the first to consistently adopt Conversation Analysis as an approach to second language interaction. By examining first and second language speakers' participation in a wide range of activities, it challenges the dominant view of 'nonnative speakers' as deficient communicators. Proposing instead to understand second language users' conversational participation as interactional achievement, the book makes a powerful case for 'ethnomethodological respecification' in second language research." Professor Gabriele Kasper, University of Hawai'i Conversations involving speakers whose first language is not the language in which they are talking have become widespread in the globa...
This book reports on the German research initiative AeroStruct, a three-year collaborative project between universities and the aircraft industry. It describes the development of an integrated multidisciplinary simulation environment for aircraft analysis and optimization using high-fidelity methods. This system is able to run at a high level of automatism, thus representing a step forward with respect to previous ones. Its special features are: a CAD description that is independent from the disciplines involved, an automated CFD mesh generation and an automated structure model generation including a sizing process. The book also reports on test cases by both industrial partners and DLR demo...
This is a story about the American financier and PR genius, Bill Browder. In the 1990s and through the 2000s, Bill Browder built the largest foreign investment fund in Russia. He was a keen fan of Russia's president Vladimir Putin, until several tax issues, a ban from Russia and a dead tax advisor changed all that. For more than a decade, Bill Browder has pushed the story of his dead “lawyer” Sergei Magnitsky worldwide; a story, which is distorted at best, at worst entirely false. With huge fanfare, he has created a US human rights law in the name of his dead tax advisor. Bill Browder has been a central figure in the worldwide stories about laundering of Russian money, which have been fi...
This book reports on the German research initiative ComFliTe (Computational Flight Testing), the main goal of which was to enhance the capabilities of and tools for numerical simulation in flight physics to support future aircraft design and development. The initiative was coordinated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and promoted collaboration between the aircraft industry and academia. Activities focused on improving physical modeling for separated flows, developing advanced numerical algorithms for series computations and sensitivity predictions, as well as surrogate and reduced order modeling for aero data production and developing robust fluid-, structure- and flight mechanics coupli...
