French Algerian artist Kader Attia has often focused his work on marginalised communities or people living on the periphery of society ? whether LGBTQ, illegal immigrants, or the mentally or physically disabled.00His photographic series, 'La Piste d?atterrissage' (Landing Strip) (2000?2002) offers psychologically complex and astonishingly intimate portraits of a community of transgender Algerian prostitutes in Paris, many of whom were illegal immigrants.00The artist developed close relationships with members of this community whilst assisting them in their efforts to gain legal residence in France, and his photographs portray the full spectrum of their existence, from precarious work lives to everyday domestic life and moments of personal happiness.

This monograph gives a comprehensive overview of the variety and scope of the research carried out by Kader Attia (*1970 in Dugny, Seine-Saint-Denis, lives and works in Berlin and Algiers) over the past 15 years, using media as varied as installation, video, photography, and collage. It highlights the unique and powerful ways in which Attia addresses the global entanglement of culture, politics, and identity. Attia’s artistic research is informed by his own experience of moving back and forth as a child between France and Algeria, between the Christian Occident and the Islamic Maghreb, and later by his years spent in Venezuela and the Congo. In seinem Werk zeigt sich die Produktivität der Dissonanz: wo afrikanische Masken, ausgestopfte Tiere, naturwissenschaftliche Instrumente, historische Artefakte scheinbar nichts miteinander zu tun haben, stellt der Ku¿nstler Verbindungen zwischen dem europäischen Umgang mit der eigenen Kolonialgeschichte, der aktuellen Migrationspolitik und städtebauliche Realitäten in den Metrololen von heute her.
