The Maya Book of Life

THE MAYA BOOK OF LIFE: UNDERSTANDING THE XULTUN TAROT is the companion book to the Xultun Tarot Classic Edition. It explores the archetypes and alchemy of the major arcana of the Xultun Tarot through indigenous teachings and the analytical psychology of C G Jung and casts new light on the meaning of 2012. The Xultun Tarot was created by Peter Balin in 1976 based on images from Maya history and culture. Taken from a single painting, it is the only tarot deck where the major arcana form a complete picture. This picture is a symbolic image of the alchemical marriage of spirit and matter and a map of what Jung called the individuation process. Only 500 copies of the original Xultun Tarot were ever printed. Now Kahurangi Press (xultun.com) has recreated this classic, long out-of-print deck true to its original large size and vibrant colours together with a book that explains the profound symbolism of the cards. Michael Owen is a clinical psychologist in private practice and author of Jung and the Native American Moon Cycles. He lives in New Zealand.

This book argues that there is a need to develop greater indigenous-led intergenerational resilience in order to meet the challenges posed by contemporary crises of climate change, cultural clashes, and adversity. In today’s media, the climate crisis is kept largely separate and distinct from the violent cultural clashes unfolding on the grounds of religion and migration, but each is similarly symptomatic of the erasure of the human connection to place and the accompanying tensions between generations and cultures. This book argues that both forms of crisis are intimately related, under-scored and driven by the structures of white supremacism which at their most immediate and visible, mani...

African Cinema: Manifesto and Practice for Cultural Decolonization

Challenging established views and assumptions about traditions and practices of filmmaking in the African diaspora, this three-volume set offers readers a researched critique on black film. Volume Three of this landmark series on African cinema spans the past century and is devoted to the documentation of decoloniality in cultural policy in both Africa and the Black diaspora worldwide. A compendium of formal resolutions, declarations, manifestos, and programmatic statements, it chronologically maps the long history and trajectories of cultural policy in Africa and the Black Atlantic. Beginning with the 1920 declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World, which anticipates cinema as we know it today, and the formal oppositional assertions—aspirational and practical. The first part of this work references formal statements that pertain directly to cultural policy and cinematic formations in Africa, while the next part addresses the Black diaspora. Each entry is chronologically ordered to account for when the statement was created, followed by where and in what context it was enunciated.

''Building on the success of Kahurangi Calling and Kahurangi Stories, Gerard Hindmarsh's latest offering Kahurangi Out West is the final in this trilogy of stories from the backcountry of Northwest Nelson. An area of outstanding ecological and geological complexity, Kahurangi also generated a rich and colourful social history. Told here are the stories which start with the earliest human arrivals and finish with the family stories of the graziers who live along Kahurangi's wild western flank today. Drovers, loggers, mill workers, top secret coast watchers, linesmen, miners and uranium prospectors, there's also the story of King Tom of the Matakitaki, and one man's obsession with traversing the formidable Dragon's Teeth of the Douglas Range. Highly readable and engaging, Kahurangi Out West weaves together the best stories to make a compelling blend of tales about a remarkable corner of New Zealand. Written by a local with a love of the area and a nose for a good story''--Back cover.
