The Protestant Reformation began in Germany in 1517, and the adoption of Lutheranism was the decisive impetus for literary development in Finland. As the Reformation required the use of the vernacular in services and ecclesiastical ceremonies, new manuals and biblical translations were needed urgently. Michael Agricolas Hauptwerk ist das 1548 erschienene Neue Testament, ein prächtiger Quartband von 700 Seiten mit hundert Holzschnitten. Als Grundtext dienten der von Erasmus veröffentlichte griechische Text, Erasmus’ lateinische Übersetzung, die Vulgata, die Lutherbibel und die schwedische Bibel von 1541. Die 450 Randglossen stammen aus der Lutherbibel und aus der schwedischen Bibel. In seiner Übersetzung unterschied Agricola ”die eigenen Worte des Heiligen Geistes”, d. h. den Bibeltext, von den Vorreden und Marginalglossen, die nur ”dem klareren Verständnis” dienen sollten. Das Wort Gottes sei viel wertvoller als das Menschenwort, so dass der Übersetzer eng an den Text gebunden war. Eine freie Übersetzung kam nicht in Frage, von Bewusster Verbesserung des Textes ganz zu schweigen. Bei den Vorreden und Randglossen konnte er freier vorgehen. Meistens übersetzte er wortgetreu, scheute sich aber nicht vor Auslassungen, Ergänzungen und Änderungen, wenn er sie für angebracht hielt. In der vorliegenden kritischen Edition werden Agricolas Randglossen zum Neuen Testament paralleler mit ihren Quellen gedruckt.

Jason Lavery examines the Reformation in the Diocese of Turku during the reign of King Gustav Vasa (r. 1523-1560). This diocese, covering a territory better known then and now as Finland, encompassed the Swedish kingdom east of the Gulf of Bothnia. The Reformation in Finland was driven by King Gustav Vasa’s state-building program, sometimes referred to as “royal reform” in respect to the church, as well as the spread of Lutheran theology and practice. This book studies the ”grey area” of the success story of rural lending libraries in the Nordic countries through the activities of people’s libraries in one area of Central Finland.
