The work of the twentieth-century Argentine writer Cortazar is analyzed by Standish (foreign languages and literature, East Carolina U., Greenville), who writes with the assurance of his long familiarity with the author's work. Of the eight chapters, the first is devoted to Cortazar's life, the remainder to his writing, which is divided chronologically and by genre. Cortazar's own writing on literature and his controversial political identity each merit separate chapters. c. Book News Inc.
The Greek film musical was the most popular film genre in Greece in the 1960s. The songs became instant hits, the dances were performed at parties, and the fashions were imitated by people of all ages. Challenging assumptions that the Greek film musical was a culturally lacking imitation of Hollywood, this work examines the genre as a cinematic and historical phenomenon that condensed key social and cultural concerns of its time, and contributed to the development of a national popular culture in the light of the rapid Americanization of postwar Greece. During two decades characterized by affluence and upward mobility in Greek society, the musical expressed and reinforced the optimism of the...

While the extensible markup language (XML) has received a great deal of attention in web programming and software engineering, far less attention has been paid to XML in mainstream computational science and engineering. Correcting this imbalance, XML in Scientific Computing introduces XML to scientists and engineers in a way that illustrates the similarities and differences with traditional programming languages and suggests new ways of saving and sharing the results of scientific calculations. The author discusses XML in the context of scientific computing, demonstrates how the extensible stylesheet language (XSL) can be used to perform various calculations, and explains how to create and navigate through XML documents using traditional languages such as Fortran, C++, and MATLAB®. A suite of computer programs are available on the author’s website.

Our goal was to start in Maiori and hike to Sorrento, stopping at a different place each night. We planned our route using the travel guide "Landscapes of Sorrento, Amalfi Coast and Capri: walks and car tours", published by Sunflower Books. We concluded staying in a different location each night was not possible. The logistics of whether to carry a tent and sleeping bag was an unanswered question. Finally we concluded that staying in one place for the week was practical, economical, and sensible. We studied the maps and routes for a month and realized many of the places we wanted to explore were in and around Sorrento. All buses leave from Sorrento each morning so it made sense that Sorrento would be our base camp. We would get a room for a week and took the bus each morning to our daily hike. A week stay is less expensive and we could leave the majority of our supplies in the room, taking only what we needed each day.
