Social Work Practice to the Benefit of Our Clients: Scholarly Legacy of Edward J. Mullen

This book follows the intellectual track and legacy of one of the most illustrious social work educators of our time, Edward J. Mullen, the Willma and Albert Musher Professor Emeritus of Columbia University and a fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. The collection of chapters is written by European and American scholars, social work leaders in their respective countries and beyond. Most of the contributions originate from a seminar organized by the Inter-Centre Network for Evaluation of Social Work Practice (Intsoceval), a network of social work scholars, and hosted in 2014 by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy. This volume provides a remarkable and unique perspective on not only the professional trajectory of an eminent social worker but also the history of contemporary social work.

Validity and Social Experimentation

The leading social research methodologists and evaluators address the issues of validity, research design and social experimentation in this first of two volumes inspired by the work of Donald Campbell and sponsored by the American Evaluation Association. Each chapter is designed to offer readers insight into such issues as validity applied to meta-analysis, subject selection problems in randomized experiments, time-series designs and quasi-experiments, and the logic of ruling out rival hypotheses. Anyone engaged in social research will find this book a thought-provoking and inspiring read for their work.

Linking Health Care and Social Services

Universal health care and social services are fundamental building blocks of the welfare state. Invariably they are discrete organizational systems. The problems of clients, however, often overlap. This international volume examines, country by country, the relationship between the health service and the social services. `This volume is a welcome addition to the literature that examines the provision of health and social services from an international perspective...the book is useful at two levels: first, as an introduction to the different health and social service delivery systems; and second, as an exploration of the factors that inhibit the establishment of linkages at the service delivery level. Published in 1997, the is the report of a study commissioned by the Department of Social Security (UK). The aim of the study was to provide detailed information about the social assistance systems of four European countries which, to a greater or lesser extent, are delegated to local levels of government. The study distinguished between policy-making, finances, delivery and accountability. The strengths and weaknesses of each system were evaluated and common and divergent trends noted. There is growing interest in social assistance schemes internationally and this publication provides original information about European schemes. It follows an earlier study, also commissioned by the DSS, on social assistance schemes in 24 OECD countries.
