This volume explores the bilateral treaties concluded after 1990 between the Republic of Poland and its neighbouring states (Germany, then-Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Belarus and Lithuania), known as treaties on neighbourly relations or good neighbourhood treaties. These treaties, through which Poland and its neighbours were able to establish their political, security and social relations, were extremely significant in that they provided a unique way for them to organise their interstate post-Cold War relations. This book analyses the consequences of these treaties and addresses a variety of issues, including security policy and cooperation, migration, national minority rights, economic cooperation, education, and cross-border cooperation.

The Routledge Handbook of Soft Power

The Routledge Handbook of Soft Power (2nd Edition) offers a comprehensive, detailed, and ground-breaking examination of soft power – a key factor in cultural diplomacy, cultural relations, and public diplomacy. Interrogating soft power as influence, the handbook examines manifestations in media, public mind, policy, and theory – in a fraught geopolitical climate, one demanding reconceptualization of soft power’s role in state and civic society behaviour. Part I provides important new conceptualization and critical analysis of soft power from international relations, philosophical, and other social theoretical perspectives; analyses multiple methods of soft power measurement and makes p...

This book examines the outcome of the British commitment to reconstitute a sovereign Polish state and establish a democratic Polish government after the Second World War. It analyses the wartime origins of Churchill’s commitment to Poland, and assesses the reasons for the collapse of British efforts to support the leader of the Polish opposition, Stanisław Mikołajczyk, in countering the attempt by the Polish communist party to establish one-party rule after the war. This examination of Anglo-Polish relations is set within the broader context of emerging early Cold War tensions. It addresses the shift in British foreign policy after 1945 towards the US, the Soviet Union and Europe, as Bri...

Peace at All Costs

Although it was characterized by simmering international tensions, the early Cold War also witnessed dramatic instances of reconciliation between states, as former antagonists rebuilt political, economic, and cultural ties in the wake of the Second World War. And such efforts were not confined to official diplomacy, as this study of postwar rapprochement between Poland and West Germany demonstrates. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Peace at All Costs follows Polish and German non-state activists who attempted to establish dialogue in the 1950s and 1960s, showing how they achieved modest successes and media attention at the cost of more nuanced approaches to their national histories and identities.

Reconciliation - Partnership - Security

The theme of this collection of academic essays relates to the dimensions of Polish-German cooperation with regard to security, which has mainly occurred during the last 25 years since the signing of the 1991 Treaty on Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between the Republic of Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany. Due to the complexity of Polish-German relations, it is also necessary to take their historical background into consideration. That is why some of the studies address historical aspects of the countries' bilateral relationship, i.e. those prior to 1991, which will provide the readers with a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of Polish-German relations....

Dotyczy polityki bezpieczeństwa w ujęciu geopolitycznym oraz niezmiernie istotnych i aktualnych problemów, podejmowanych z punktu widzenia oceny i znaczenia potęgi państw w ładzie międzynarodowym współczesnego świata. Dziedzina politologii, którą zajmuje się Profesor Mirosław Sułek jest niebywale istotna. Profesor należy do grona najwybitniejszych badaczy i uznanych autorytetów w zakresie potęgonomii i potęgometrii w Polsce i poza jej granicami. prof. Krzysztof Miszczak
