Evaluating Leisure Services

This book fills a void in our literature with a comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of evaluation in recreation, park and leisure services. The book provides a basic over view and working knowledge of evaluation procedures for upper level undergraduate students, beginning graduate students, and practitioners who wish to apply evaluation research in their work. The authors have written the book in concise, clear chapters in which they not only outline key points, but also provide examples of various evaluation issues.

Both Gains and Gaps

Both Gains and Gaps

This publication is a book-in-progress that elaborates on issues about women, gender, and leisure across the life span. The text is an update of Leisure of One's Own (1989) and contains 80% new, revised, and updated material. Although many gains have been made in understanding women's leisure, much remains to be learned. Both Gains and Gaps provides further information about women and the issues that surround both the gains and gaps associated with the construct we commonly call leisure. This textbook serves as an introduction to issues and questions concerning women and leisure. Building on both leisure studies and women's studies, Henderson, Bialeschki, Shaw, and Freysinger offer a social-psychological analysis of women and their leisure from feminist perspectives. No prior knowledge of women's studies or leisure studies is assumed in this definitive work.

The ‘outdoors’ is a physical and ideological space in which people engage with their environment, but it is also an important vehicle for learning and for leisure. The Routledge Handbook of Outdoor Studies is the first book to attempt to define and survey the multi-disciplinary set of approaches that constitute the broad field of outdoor studies, including outdoor recreation, outdoor education, adventure education, environmental studies, physical culture studies and leisure studies. It reflects upon the often haphazard development of outdoor studies as a discipline, critically assesses current knowledge in outdoor studies, and identifies further opportunities for future research in this ...

Leisure, Women, and Gender is part of an ongoing examination that explores and elaborates issues of leisure for girls and women. The book is both an update of A Leisure of One's Own: A Feminist Perspective on Women's Leisure (1989) and Both Gains and Gaps: Feminist Perspectives on Women’s Leisure (1996) and a departure from these earlier works, in its process and structure. Specifically, in this volume, rather than writing about the research that others are doing, we invited some of those researchers to talk about how they came to study leisure, women, and gender; what they have learned from their research; and to reflect on directions for future research. Hence, organizationally and structurally it falls in the “middle ground” between a co-authored and an edited book: it mixes writing by the book’s editors with the voices of invited scholars, who contribute central and additional perspectives regarding the topics.

The editors began work on Leisure from International Voices as a labor of love. The book highlights how important leisure is in the lives of people throughout the world and how it is universal in its value. Yet, leisure is also imagined and practiced in various ways based on geographic areas and their associated cultures. Chapters are presented from six continents, with 33 individual scholars from across the globe providing a broad perspective of leisure and its meanings. People are diverse in any given country/region. Leisure from International Voices, however, portrays the essence of leisure and how it is perceived, practiced, and studied in particular countries/regions. Challenges associa...

Volunteerism is a topic of increasing importance in this age of budget cuts, declining employment and amid the threat posed by other competing leisure pursuits. There are both social and economic benefits of volunteering. As we are becoming more reliant on volunteers, there is a need for a better understanding of why people take up volunteering, and how to recruit, manage, motivate, and support volunteers most effectively. In order for organisations that host volunteers to achieve the most from their volunteers, they must understand how to give them the best "leisure" experience. This book examines critical aspects of contemporary volunteerism, from the perspective of a variety of volunteering contexts. It will appeal to academic researchers and students in disciplines such as leisure, recreation, tourism, management and sociology as well as practitioners in the voluntary sector (including volunteers), National and Local Government and those organising special events that depend on voluntary support.

Evaluation is a process that each of us uses every day. Professionals in any field of human services must have the means to access and assess information. Having information is not enough, however, unless that information can be applied and used. To organize and manage recreation services (i.e., all elements related to the various specialties in the field such as parks, tourism, sports, arts, therapeutic recreation, camping, event management), information is needed about people's preferences, needs, and behaviors and the programs, administrative structures, and resources that comprise the organizations. To build a body of knowledge and to document the value of recreation, systematic processe...
