How to finance sustainable forest management (SFM) has been a question of perennial interest and concern for the forestry community. It has been estimated that the required funding for SFM is in the order of US$70-160 billion per year globally. At present, official development assistance disbursements to forestry cover about 1 percent of the estimated total financing needs for SFM, and other available public sector financing sources barely double that amount. To scale up SFM, to create value-added economic growth and employment and protect forests from competing unsustainable land uses, domestic and foreign private financing and investments need to increase significantly.Despite the importan...
Providing a multifaceted view of modern Finland, this book describes its history, culture, language, geography, natural history and the mythology of early peoples. Topics include Fenno-Scandia inhabitants and their environment, traditional naturalism and modern environmentalism, and the salient features of "Finnishness," including an analysis of the Finnish educational system and gender equality. Finland's art, architecture and music are highlighted, along with its peace-keeping missions worldwide. The country's several ethnic groups and their languages are discussed--the Saami, Finns, Finland-Swedes, Russian-speaking peoples, Jews and Gypsies. The author examines Finland's late but rapid development in commerce and industry, with a focus on the history of Nokia Corporation, which grew from a 19th-century manufacturer of pulpwood and rubber boots to a 21st-century international digital communications company.
Finnish psychiatric practice has been heavily based on institutionalization, and mental hospitals have played important cultural and historical roles in Finland. Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the bodily, spatial, affective, and multisensory aspects of the memories of patients, relatives, staff, and their children. The memories were collected and archived in the Finnish Literature Society in 2014–2015. These 92 written pieces cover the period from the 1930s to the 2010s. They reflect significant changes in Finnish psychiatry and provide crucial insights into the various meanings of mental hospitals in people’s lives, and the social and cultural forces that shape attitudes to a...

Hämeenkyröläisessä kylässä eletään 1800-lukua. Elanto saadaan pellosta, karjasta ja luonnosta. Kirkon opetuksista huolimatta kansa uskoo yhä vuosisataisiin taikoihin ja loitsuihin. Sairaudet hoidetaan yrteillä, tervalla ja viinalla. Talollisen tytär Eeva oppii yrttien salat jo lapsena omalta äidiltään. Myös päätös ryhtyä parantajaksi syntyy hyvin varhain. Rohkea Eeva ei taivu vanhempiensa laatimiin tulevaisuudensuunnitelmiin, vaan luo itse oman tiensä. Sillä tiellä hän oppii kantamaan vastuuta yksin. Elämää varjostavat huoli toimeentulosta ja kirkon syytteet salavuoteudesta. Ketunkiven Eeva on kertomus vaikeuksien voittamisesta, rakkaudenkaipuusta, elinikäisistä ystävyyksistä ja suojelevasta äitiydestä.
