An ensemble system is a collection of nearly identical dynamical systems which admit a certain degree of heterogeneity, and which are subject to the restriction that they may only be manipulated or observed as a whole. This thesis presents analysis and control methods for cellular ensembles by considering reduced 1-dimensional dynamics of biological processes in high-dimensional single-cell data and models. This book celebrates Professor Mathukumalli Vidyasagar’s outstanding achievements in systems, control, robotics, statistical learning, computational biology, and allied areas. The contributions in the book summarize the content of invited lectures given at the workshop “Emerging Applications of Control and Systems Theory” (EACST17) held at the University of Texas at Dallas in late September 2017 in honor of Professor Vidyasagar’s seventieth birthday. These contributions are the work of twenty-eight distinguished speakers from eight countries and are related to Professor Vidyasagar’s areas of research. This Festschrift volume will remain as a permanent scientific record of this event.
The quantitative understanding of changes in cell types, referred to as cell type transitions, is fundamental to advance fields such as stem cell research, immunology, and cancer therapies. But William Bligh was one of the least violent disciplinarians in the British navy. It is this paradox which inspired Greg Dening to ask why the mutiny took place. His book explores the theatrical nature of what was enacted in the power-play on deck, on the beaches at Tahiti and in the murderous settlement at Pitcairn, on the altar stones and temples of sacrifice, and on the catheads from which men were hanged. This book is a collaborative effort from three workshops held over the last three years, all involving principal contributors to the vine-copula methodology. Research and applications in vines have been growing rapidly and there is now a growing need to collate basic results, and standardize terminology and methods. Specifically, this handbook will (1) trace historical developments, standardizing notation and terminology, (2) summarize results on bivariate copulae, (3) summarize results for regular vines, and (4) give an overview of its applications. In addition, many of these results are new and not readily available in any existing journals. New research directions are also discussed.
The aim of this book is to summarize our understanding on the insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. This area of research received great impetus from the identification of the first subunit sequences to be used as neonicotinoid insecticide target sites. Although a book of this nature can provide the details only of commonly published results, it is hoped that it may provide a useful guide to the newcomer to the field as well as to point out some of the future challenges. For example, we need to determine the precise subunit nomenclature of insect nicotinic receptors. This nomenclature varies amongst species and this led to some of the early confusion that persists. We need to be precise in identifying the subunit composition of native insect nicotinic receptor subtypes, their functional properties and physiological roles.
