Literature in English is a term that has recently appeared to include both English literature in the traditional sense of the word and all the newly emerging literatures written and published in English whose authors may represent various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This series as well as our yearly Literature in English Symposium (LIES) organized by the Department of English Literature and Literary Linguistics, the School of English at Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań (Poland), respond to the current interest in wider mapping of English literature. Each year the symposium is devoted to a particular topic linked with the interests of an invited writer, whose presentation we also publish. This volume is devoted to the issue of self-fashioning and self-representation as it is the main area of interest of Andrew Miller.
Culture, Experience, Care: Re-Centring the Patient
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. Susan Sontag claimed that ‘everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well, and the kingdom of the sick,’ and while ‘we all prefer to use only the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.’ We are all, in other words, past, present, or future patients. This collection examines the many ways in which the idea of the patient can be conceptualized in different cultural, professional, intellectual, and emotional contexts as part of an on-going, multidisciplinary and international attempt by scholars, health care professionals, and, indeed, patients themselves to rethink and re-examine patienthood and patient care. These chapters attempt to put the patient at the centre: not just (although clearly not least) at the centre of the processes, institutions, and ideologies of medical care, but of a wide range of intellectual and social practices.
'And Yet I Remember'
«And Yet I Remember» explores representations of ageing and old age in English drama from 1660 to the 1750s. Within these approximately ninety years, England witnessed significant developments in medicine and the advent of sentimental philosophy, which began to transform attitudes toward old age and ageing. This study discusses the enduring cultural and literary stereotyping of old(er) people in culture and drama of this period. The chapters are organised around the stereotypes that kept reappearing in cultural, medical and religious narratives on old age, namely the desiring old man (senex amans) and woman (the «lusty old widow») and the nostalgic and wise elder. Exploring many diverse storylines between 1660 and the 1750s that treat old age and present old(er) characters, the analyses in this study further show how the choice of genre, personal experiences and attitudes of the playwright, and political and cultural revolutions affected the representation of older people.

Death, Dying, Culture: An Interdisciplinary Interrogation
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. This inter- and multi-disciplinary volume examines how culture impacts care for the dying, the overall experience of dying, and ways the dead are remembered. Over the past three decades, scholarship in thanatology has increased dramatically. This text localizes a broad array of perspectives that research, analyze, and interpret the many interrelations and interactions that exist between death and culture. Culture not only presents and portrays ideas about ‘a good death’ and norms that seek to achieve it, but culture also operates as both a vehicle and medium through which meaning about death is communicated and understood. The Arc of Memory in the Aftermath of Trauma
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2015. This volume explores the diversity of transnational catalysts of trauma and the interconnected nature of its global out workings. With reference to literary, filmic, visual and memorial representations, the volume reflects trauma as a multi-contextual impact emanating out of a macrocosmic and microcosmic social catalysts. The essays deal with broad issues of religious and political ideologies, imperial impulses, ethnic and national contestation and the myriad ways in which they drill down to the individual level - domestic violence and other violations, poverty and oppression, inequity, gnawing injustice and more. They also crisscross over domestic, national and global political frameworks. The essays speak to the imperative to represent painful collective pasts so as to alleviate its agony and acknowledge the right of its victims and perpetrators to give witness. By extension, it speaks to the practical and ideological imperative to engage issues of trauma, ethics and testimony.

The (Un)Certain Future of Empathy in Posthumanism, Cyberculture and Science Fiction
This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2015. This volume investigates the future of empathy as contemplated by posthumanism, cyberculture and science fiction. As humanity increasingly networks and communicates online, the reconfiguration of human communities through the removal and immediacy of the body challenges traditional notions of humanity and human capacity for empathy. The impact of cyberculture and posthumanism on humanity and its capacity for empathy is here assessed through research in literature, films, neuroscience, anthropology and philosophy. This volume addresses the centrality of the body to human interactions and assesses how intrinsic it is to the defining of the human. The exploration of posthuman narratives which display futuristic bodily modifications also engages with the anxieties and hopes for the future of human empathy. Research in dystopian narratives shows that these anxieties are also expressed without the tropes of bodily modifications and that ideological distancing creates the conditions necessary for a lack of empathy towards otherness.
