In Search of an Alternative Biopolitics
Beilin takes readers on a journey through the history of alternative thought that challenges mainstream understandings of the relations between the human and nonhuman realms. Weaving through the works of Mariano José de Larra, Eugenio Noel, Luis Buñuel, Luis Martín-Santos, Pedro Almodóvar, Pablo Bérguer, Juan Mayorga, and Rosa Montero, Beilin convincingly demonstrates that "the question of the animal" has long been of particular significance for Spanish culture. Analyses of the synergy of press debates on bullfighting and the War on Terror, as well as media debates on King Juan Carlos's hunt in Botswana and his resignation, reveal how the concepts structuring human/animal relations condition national biopolitics. Beilin traces a main principle, where sacrifice of some lives is deemed necessary for the sake of others, from bullfighting, through environmental destruction and immigration policies, to bioeconomy.

Understories: Plants and Culture in the American Tropics
Understories: Plants and Culture in the American Tropics establishes the central importance of plants to the histories and cultures of the extended tropical region stretching from the U.S. South to Argentina. Through close examination of a number of significant plants – cacao, mate, agave, the hevea brasilensis, kudzu, the breadfruit, soy, and the ceiba pentandra, among others – this volume shows that vegetal life has played a fundamental role in shaping societies and in formulating cultural and environmental imaginaries in and beyond the region. Drawing on a wide range of cultural traditions and forms across literature, popular music, art, and film, the essays included in this volume transcend regional and linguistic boundaries to bring together multiple plant-centred histories or ‘understories’ – narratives that until now have been marginalized or gone unnoticed. Attending not only to the significant influence of humans on plants, but also of plants on humans, this book offers new understandings of how colonization, globalization, and power were, and continue to be, imbricated with nature in the American tropics.
New Women’s Writing in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe
Since the late 1980s, there has been an explosion of women’s writing in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe greater than in any other cultural period. This book, which contains contributions by scholars and writers from many different countries, aims to address the gap in literature and debate that exists in relation to this subject. We investigate why women’s writing has become so prominent in post-socialist countries, and enquire whether writers regard their gender as a burden, or, on the contrary, as empowering. We explore the relationship in contemporary women’s writing between gender, class, and nationality, as well as issues of ethnicity and post-colonialism.

The Spanish Golden Age novelist Miguel de Cervantes has long cast a shadow over the writers who have followed in his wake. This book explores the great novelist's influence on contemporary Spanish writers. The links between the Golden Age tradition and contemporary writing are examined by leading academics in the field of the Spanish contemporary novel. The collection focuses on aspects of literary technique and metafiction, particularly the role of the narrator, the mixing of fictional and real characters, and self-reflection and literary criticism within the novel. These are all techniques that have recognisable Cervantine traits. Other parallels with Cervantes's writing are explored such as the portrayal of a hero with quixotic characteristics and the imitation of specific episodes from Cervantes's works.
