Collect and Record!

This volume tells the largely unknown story of Holocaust survivors who founded Jewish historical commissions and documentation centers in Europe immediately after World War II. Their initiatives collected thousands of Nazi documents along with 20,000 testimonies, 10,000 questionnaires, and large numbers of memoirs, diaries, songs, poems, and artifacts of Jewish victims. They pioneered the development of a Holocaust historiography that used both victim and perpetrator sources to describe the social, economic, and cultural aspects of the everyday life and death of European Jews under the Nazi regime, while placing the experiences of Jews at the center of the story.

It is in early childhood that the foundations of many of our fundamental attitudes and values are first put into place. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is all about the future and it is young children who have the greatest stake as citizens in the future. This book provides an introduction to education for sustainability in the field of early childhood. Written by leading experts and including the very latest international thinking on the subject, it clearly describes how the idea of ESD emerged, and shows how today it includes an integration of social, environmental and economic aspects of life and society. The authors look at what is already being done in early years settings and provides practical support for practitioners to develop this further drawing on best practice from around the world. Presenting a wide range of examples of projects carried out with young children, this timely book aims to offer practitioners inspiration for further development of Education for Sustainable Development in the early years. It will also be a rich source of information for those concerned with policy development.

Seed Ecology

This book is about the regeneration of plants from seed under field conditions. It attempts to give a reasonably balanced overview of the many aspects of this broad topic. The first chapter introduces some general ideas about reproduction in plants. Subsequent chapters deal with the early stages in the life of a plant, from ovule to established seedling, in a more or less chronological order. The final chapter shows how the data on regeneration requirements of different species can be used to explain a number of important characteristics of whole plant communities. The study of the ecological aspects of reproduction by seed touches on a range of issues of current interest in biology. A discu...

Noam Chomsky, more than any other researcher, has radically restructured the study of human language over the past several decades. While the study of government and binding is an outgrowth of Chomsky's earlier work in transformational grammar, it represents a significant shift in focus and a new direction of investigation into the fundamentals of linguistic theory. This monograph consolidates and extends this new approach. It serves as a concise introduction to government-binding theory, applies it to several new domains of empirical data, and proposes some revisions to the principles of the theory that lead to greater unification, descriptive scope, and explanatory depth.Earlier work in the...

The Syntax of Welsh

The Syntax of Welsh

Welsh, like the other Celtic languages, is best known amongst linguists for its verb-initial word order and its use of initial consonant mutations. However it has many more characteristics which are of interest to syntacticians. This book, first published in 2007, provides a concise and accessible overview of the major syntactic phenomena of Welsh. A broad variety of topics are covered, including finite and infinitival clauses, noun phrases, agreement and tense, word order, clause structure, dialect variation, and the language's historical Celtic background. Drawing on work carried out in both Principles and Parameters theory and Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar, it takes contemporary colloquial Welsh as its starting point and draws contrasts with a range of literary and dialectal forms of the language, as well as earlier forms (Middle Welsh) were appropriate. An engaging guide to all that is interesting about Welsh syntax, this book will be welcomed by syntactic theorists, typologists, historical linguists and Celticists alike.
