There is no other time in life when the provision of adequate and balanced nutrition is of greater importance than during infancy and childhood. During this dynamic phase of life, sufficient amounts and an appropriate composition of supplied substrates are of key importance for growth, functional outcomes, and the metabolic programming of long-term health and wellbeing. This condensed volume was compiled with the aim of providing concise information to readers who seek quick guidance on the practice of nutrition of infants, children, and adolescents. After the great success of the first two editions, the editors prepared this thoroughly revised and updated third edition with a truly international perspective to address challenges in both affluent and challenged populations around the world. This book of outstanding quality will be useful to many healthcare professionals around the world, and it will contribute to further enhancing the quality of feeding of healthy infants and children, as well as enhancing the standards of nutritional care in sick children.
This book takes a unique approach to the examination of the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa (and bulimia). White, middle-class, heterosexual women share their insights into the emergence of their illnesses through detailed interviews that consider perceptions of the role of family, the influence of cultural messages regarding thinness and beauty, the agency these women exert in the use of weight control to cope with life’s stressors, the meaning they attach to their eating disorders and how these issues together perpetuate their disease. The book uses a Symbolic Interactionist framework and a grounded theory approach to examine the narratives which emerge from these women’s stories. Themes of family, culture, and self arise in their narratives; these form the theoretical underpinnings for this book, and combine to shape the comprehensive model of eating disorders that emerges from this study. Haworth-Hoeppner’s book will appeal to researchers and advanced students of sociology, women’s studies, family studies, social psychology, and gender studies.
Eating disorders in childhood and adolescence are becoming increasingly important. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa typically start in childhood and adolescence, and in some areas their prevalence is increasing. Binge-eating disorder, pica and rumination disorder, and disorder with avoidance and/or restriction of food intake have now been included in the ICD-11 and DSM-5 classification systems for the first time. This volume presents major new findings on the aetiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these conditions in accordance with the evidence-based guidelines in Germany and against the background of the current state of international research. It provides assistance in the treatment of these disorders & which often tend to become chronic & not only for all those working in hospitals and private practice, but also for the patients= parents and guardians. Both of the book=s editors have many years of experience in treating eating disorders and conducting research on them.
