An Archaeology of Social Identity

Based on her Doctoral research, Katherine Giles's study focuses on the physical structure and spatial arrangement of medieval guildhalls. A programme of EDM and hand survey, as well as photogaphic recording was applied to three guildhalls in York (Trinity Hall, St John the Baptist's Hall and St Anthony's Hall), and the author's theoretical and methodological approaches are considered with regard to these case studies and to the study of guildhalls in general.

Estate Landscapes : Design, Improvement and Power in the Post-medieval Landscape

An exciting study of the social and landscape phenomena of the Estate Landscape. In recent years, the post-medieval landscape has attracted new interest from archaeologists, historians, and geographers concerned to understand the development of the historic environment. One of the key structuring elements within these landscapes from the sixteenth century until the aftermath of the Second World War was undoubtedly the landed estate. However, it was not until the late nineteenth century that any systematic attempt to quantify the presence of these estates was undertaken, prompted by the move to democratic reform and the persistent link between political power and landed wealth. Yet the import...

La Popa Basin, Nuevo León and Coahuila, Mexico

This book describes the two excursions accessed from the Monterrey International Airport on the north side of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. Excellent exposures of salt diapirs and flanking strata in La Popa basin, northeastern Mexico, contain world-class examples of salt–sediment interaction that provided the basis for the concept of halokinetic sequences. The basin also contains one of the first secondary salt welds described in outcrop. Two one-day excursions described here provide an easily accessible overview of salt–sediment relations within a short distance of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. Excursion 1 constitutes an introduction to basin stratigraphy, an introduction to halokinetic sequences at El Papalote diapir, and a visit to a salt-cored detachment fold near Hidalgo, Nuevo León. Excursion 2 is a visit to La Popa salt weld, where stops at several parts of the weld permit comparison of different structural styles developed along the weld. Each excursion begins and ends at the Marriott Courtyard Aeropuerto Hotel, near the Monterrey airport.

The wall paintings of Pickering church (North Yorkshire) are one of England's hidden artistic treasures, giving visitors and scholars alike a powerful experience of what it was like to step through the door of a late medieval painted church. In this stunningly-illustrated book, Kate Giles makes an important contribution to the study of church art and architecture, arguing that the discovery, restoration and conservation of these paintings in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries must be located within the context of contemporary religious controversies, architectural and antiquarian debates and emerging conservation philosophies.

Dwellings, Identities and Homes

The study of houses, dwellings, homes and identities is a rapidly-expanding field within medieval archaeology. Many of the 20 papers in this volume demonstrate the potential for studying buildings within their wider cultural ideological frameworks, and the methodological challenges this presents.
