Human Flourishing: The End of Law
This rich volume is an homage to the significant impact Professor Siegfried Wiessner has had on scholarship and practice in many areas of international and domestic law. Reflecting the depth and breadth of his writings, it is a collection of thought-provoking, original essays, exploring topics as diverse as theory about law, human rights, the rights of indigenous peoples, the rule of law, constitutional law, the rights of migrants, international investment law and arbitration, space law, the use of force, and many more, all integrated by the problem- and policy-oriented framework of what has come to be known as the New Haven School. During his brief literary career, Sir Philip Sidney created three major works, The Old Arcadia, Astrophil and Stella, and The New Arcadia, in whichthe female characters became progressively stronger and more completely developed. A close examination of his major female characters - Gynecia, Stella, Cecropia, Philoclea, and Pamela - along with a study of commonplace Renaissance concepts about women, reveals that Sidney's female characters deviate considerably from the conventions of his time. Sidney may well have been influenced by the women in his family, his queen, and his religion in his creation of female characters who broke the boundaries of stereotypes.
Rethinking Anti-Americanism
'Anti-Americanism' is an unusual expression; although stereotypes and hostility exist toward every nation, we do not hear of 'anti-Italianism' or 'anti-Brazilianism'. Only Americans have elevated such sentiment to the level of a world view, an explanatory factor so significant as to merit a name - an 'ism' - usually reserved for comprehensive ideological systems or ingrained prejudice. This book challenges the scholarly consensus that blames criticism of the United States on foreigners' irrational resistance to democracy and modernity. Tracing 200 years of the concept of anti-Americanism, this book argues that it has constricted political discourse about social reform and US foreign policy, from the War of 1812 and the Mexican War to the Cold War, from Guatemala and Vietnam to Iraq. Research in nine countries in five languages, with attention to diplomacy, culture, migration and the circulation of ideas, shows that the myth of anti-Americanism has often damaged the national interest.
