Academic institutions are facing a crisis in scholarly publishing at multiple levels: presses are stressed as never before, library budgets are squeezed, faculty are having difficulty publishing their work, and promotion and tenure committees are facing a range of new ways of working without a clear sense of how to understand and evaluate them. Planned Obsolescence is both a provocation to think more broadly about the academy's future and an argument for re-conceiving that future in more communally-oriented ways. Facing these issues head-on, Kathleen Fitzpatrick focuses on the technological changeso especially greater utilization of internet publication technologies, including digital archiv...

Kathleen Fitzpatrick, born in 1905, was the grand - daughter of Melbourne real estate agent JR Buxton, whose investments in land and housing brought him wealth and significantly influenced much of his city's early development. In her memoir, Solid Bluestone Foundations, described by her great friend Manning Clark as 'a magnificent book of memories', Kathleen painted an evocative picture of family life at her grandparents' mansion Hughenden in Middle Park, and of middle - class living in early twentieth - century Melbourne. In adulthood she went on to become a brilliant academic and teacher whose former pupils became some of Australia's finest historians and intellectuals. But she was also a ...

Kathleen Fitzpatrick (1872-?) was an Irish author who lived in England. She was a contributor to the Westminster Gazette for which she wrote short articles on Irish peasant life and she wrote one novel The Weans at Rowallan (1905). "Patsy quietly moved his stool back into the shadow of the chimney corner. In that mood Lull, if she saw him, would chase him from the kitchen when the news began; and clearly Teressa was bringing news worth hearing. As far back as Patsy or any of the children could remember, Teressa had brought the village gossip to Rowallan. Neither rain nor storm could keep the old woman back when there was news to tell. One thing only-a dog in her path-had power to turn her aside. The quietest dog sent her running like a hare, and the most obviously imitated bark made her cry."

Did the white male author become an endangered - and more valued - being once television's female, non-white audience (supposedly) wrote the novel's obituary?

Leading Generously

From the author of Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University comes a compelling guide to the art of collaborative leadership. In a world increasingly defined by crisis, public service institutions like colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations require capable, dynamic, and trustworthy leadership—yet stories of leadership failures there abound. The problem, Kathleen Fitzpatrick argues in Leading Generously, is a fundamental mismatch between the communal purposes that leaders must serve and the individualistic structures under which they operate. Transforming institutions so they can be resilient in the face of uncertain futures will require a similar transform...
