Africa and Europe
In Europe, Africa is often called the forgotten continent. The collapse of states, violent conflicts and natural disasters shape the public perception of Africa in Europe, while the political perspectives tend to be grossly neglected. This book wants to challenge this image in the eyes of many people through a profound analysis of main aspects of African-European relations (e.g. economics, migration, HIV / AIDS). In particular, it will be discussed what can be done to improve the relations between both continents and to develop a constructive and genuine cooperation. The book is based on the presentations and discussions of a congress of the Jesuit Scribani Network.
Socio-Cultural and Religious Conflicts and the Future of Nigeria
With the prevailing violent conflict situation of our world, perpetuated sometimes even in the name of religion, humanity today faces extinction. To reverse this ugly trend, humanity has no choice than to build a society where every tribe and tongue can coexist in peace. This work analyzed the violent conflicts from anthropological, behavioral, politico-philosophical, and theological perspectives, and makes a demand on humanity to save herself through proper education and dialogue with all men and religions. Our Most Troubling Madness
Schizophrenia has long puzzled researchers in the fields of psychiatric medicine and anthropology. Why is it that the rates of developing schizophrenia—long the poster child for the biomedical model of psychiatric illness—are low in some countries and higher in others? And why do migrants to Western countries find that they are at higher risk for this disease after they arrive? T. M. Luhrmann and Jocelyn Marrow argue that the root causes of schizophrenia are not only biological, but also sociocultural. This book gives an intimate, personal account of those living with serious psychotic disorder in the United States, India, Africa, and Southeast Asia. It introduces the notion that social defeat—the physical or symbolic defeat of one person by another—is a core mechanism in the increased risk for psychotic illness. Furthermore, “care-as-usual” treatment as it occurs in the United States actually increases the likelihood of social defeat, while “care-as-usual” treatment in a country like India diminishes it.

The Divine Body in History
This is a study in the field of comparative philosophy of religion. It initiates a dialogue between St Augustine and Rāmānuja by focusing on two central themes - time and embodiment - that play a crucial role in their thought. The elaborations of these two themes by St Augustine and Rāmānuja have continued to exert a tremendous influence on the histories of European thought and of Hindu movements centred around the notion of bhakti. The examination of the symbolism through which these thinkers articulate their understanding of time and embodiment also challenges certain stereotypes related to classical Indian thought and Latin Christendom, such as the former's lack of historical consciousness and the latter's denigration of the human body. This study shows how the 'west' and 'east' have traditionally engaged with concepts such as temporality, progress and the metaphysical status of finite and bio-physical reality.
