The nineteenth century saw huge changes in design and technology, with middle-class homes seeing drastic changes from the time of Queen Victoria's accesion in 1837 to her death in 1901. In the half century after the building of the Crystal Palace (1851), some architects, engineers, manufacturers and theorists believed that the fusion of iron and ornament would reconcile art and technology and create a new, modern architectural language.
