The American-Style University at Large: Transplants, Outposts, and the Globalization of Higher Education is an edited collection by Kathryn L. Kleypas and James McDougall that analyzes the recent expansion of American universities overseas as well as the emergence of American-style universities in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The contributors examine the various ways that American models of higher learning have become instituted around the world and explore ways that these new configurations help to define the university as a force that organizes, develops, and controls methods of education, knowledge, power, and culture.

This groundbreaking study surveys the surprising history of Shakespeare on the Arabian Peninsula, situating the current flourishing of Shakespearean performance and adaptation within the region’s complex, cosmopolitan, and rapidly changing socio-political contexts. Through first-hand performance reviews, interviews, and analysis of resources in Arabic and English, this volume brings to light the ways in which local theatremakers, students, and scholars use Shakespeare to address urgent regional issues like authoritarianism, censorship, racial discrimination and gender inequality.
This book deals with the “challenges of teaching the English language and literature” in the Middle East and North Africa region, with a special focus on the Gulf countries. It consists of different articles by an international group of educators and scholars who have first-hand experience in teaching the English language and its literatures in this region. The contributors not only investigate student attitudes, cultural, political and administrative obstacles and challenges, but they also embark upon soul-searching journeys in which they examine their own attitudes, teaching strategies, cultural prejudices and preconceptions, and personal responses to their teaching environments. They also explore, from their own personal experiences, the ‘crisis in the humanities’, cultural hegemony, ethics in translation, cross-cultural encounters, pedagogical challenges, textuality, and second language acquisition, among other issues and concerns. As such, the book represents both a scholarly investigation and a colorful palette of personal experience and response to human encounters in the classroom.
This book explores some of the major forces and changes in higher education across the world between 1945 and 2015. This includes the explosions of higher education institutions and enrollments, a development captured by the notion of massification. There were also profound shifts in the financing and economic role of higher education reflected in the processes of privatization of universities and curricula realignments to meet the shifting demands of the economy. Moreover, the systems of knowledge production, organization, dissemination, and consumption, as well as the disciplinary architecture of knowledge underwent significant changes. Internationalization emerged as one of the defining features of higher education, which engendered new modes, rationales, and practices of collaboration, competition, comparison, and commercialization. External and internal pressures for accountability and higher education’s value proposition intensified, which fuelled struggles over access, affordability, relevance, and outcomes that found expression in the quality assurance movement.
