Religion and Nation
An estimated 75,000 Iranians emigrated to Britain after the 1979 revolution and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. They are politically, religiously, socio-economically and ethnically heterogeneous, and have found themselves in the ongoing process of settlement. The aim of this book is to explore facets of this process by examining the ways in which religious traditions and practices have been maintained, negotiated and rejected by Iranians from Muslim backgrounds and how they have served as identity-building vehicles during the course of migration, in relation to the political, economic, and social situation in Iran and Britain. While the ethnographic focus is on Iranians, this book touches on more general questions associated with the process of migration, transnational societies, Diasporas, and religious as well as ethnic minorities.
Gender, Governance and Islam
Following a period of rapid political change, both globally and in relation to the Middle East and South Asia, this collection sets new terms of reference for an analysis of the intersections between global, state, non-state and popular actors and their contradictory effects on the politics of gender.The volume charts the shifts in academic discourse and global development practice that shape our understanding of gender both as an object of policy and as a terrain for activism. Nine individual case studies systematically explore how struggles for political control and legitimacy determine both the ways in which dominant gender orders are safeguarded and the diverse forms of resistance against them.

Making Islam Work
The development of Islamic landscapes in Europe, is first and foremost related to Islamic authority. Religious authority relies on persuasiveness and deals with issues of truth, authenticity, legitimacy, trust, and ethics with reference to religious matters. This study argues that Islamic authority-making among European Muslims is a social and relational practice that is much broader and versatile than theological proficiency and personal status. It can also be conferred to objects, activities, and events. The book explores various ways in which Islamic authority is being constituted among Muslims in Western Europe with a particular focus on the role of ‘ordinary’ Muslims. Religion as Brand
Religion as Brand: An Analogy to Reconceptualize Religion delves into the complex relationship between religions and brands. Through a process of abstraction, the book creates an analogy to compare religion with brand, which clarifies the similar functionalities of both within society and explores the complexities in this comparison beyond mere semiotic aspects. Through this innovative lens, it unveils the common mechanisms of both phenomena, and unveils fundamental incentives and needs in human-being nature that are evoked and fulfilled by these two social institutions.Across four diverse case studies, the book examines this analogy in real-world contexts and demonstrates how this approach can generate hypotheses. These cases explore diverse scenarios, including ISIS and Al-Qaeda as “sub-brands” of Islam, the dynamic of Islam and Judaism as “brands” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ashura ceremonies as a campaign for Shi'i Islam, and the narrativity of Evangelicalism as a sub-brand of Christianity.
