The Planters

This is a genealogical history of the McKneely families of South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. There are two branches to this Scotch-Irish family with this unique spelling. One that migrated from South Carolina to Georgia and then on to Texas and other parts of the expanding United States of America. Then there is the branch that left South Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s with other families and settled in what at the time was West Florida. This area then was taken into the United States of America with the purchase of Florida from Spain and then became a part of Louisiana. The Louisiana branch resided in the Parishes called the Florida Parishes and stayed close to the area unt...

Project Puffin

The inspiring story of a young ornithologist who reintroduced puffins where none had been seen for a century Project Puffin is the inspiring story of how a beloved seabird was restored to long-abandoned nesting colonies off the Maine coast. As a young ornithology instructor at the Hog Island Audubon Camp, Dr. Stephen W. Kress learned that puffins had nested on nearby islands until extirpated by hunters in the late 1800s. To right this environmental wrong, he resolved to bring puffins back to one such island--Eastern Egg Rock. Yet bringing the plan to reality meant convincing skeptics, finding resources, and inventing restoration methods at a time when many believed in "letting nature take it...

This document summarizes presentations made at a national policy forum concerning children's transition from home and preschool to the first years of elementary school. Opening remarks from representatives of the sponsoring agencies reviewed Goal One of the National Education Goals, which states that by the year 2000 all children in the United States will start school ready to learn, and described their agencies' work in the area of school transition. A plenary session included a presentation of various linkage and transition issues which were later addressed individually in small group discussions and regional laboratory activities. Two presenters then addressed the issue of parental and family involvement in the transition to school, while three individuals discussed the State Head Start Collaboration Program in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Oregon. Six roundtable sessions examined various issues involved in the home to school transition process. Concluding remarks addressed the challenges and opportunities facing early childhood education. A list of the forum's participants, along with their affiliations, addresses, and telephone numbers, is also included. (MDM)
