Shirin Neshat: Women in Society
This publication surveys important works drawn from the entire career of the New York-based Iranian artist Shirin Neshat (born 1957), from the iconic inscribed photographs of the Women of Allah series (1993-97) to the artist's most recent work, which looks at American culture and the ambivalent experience of being Iranian in the United States. Working nimbly in film, photography, video and multi-channel installation, Neshat's work has always engaged questions of identity and belonging, investigating the relationships between the cultures of Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, poetry and polemics, public life and private life, modernity and antiquity. Women in Society offers a comprehensive survey of Neshat's oeuvre, identifying two recurring themes in the artist's large and diverse body of work: the role of women in Islamic societies and the repercussions of traumatic, diaspora-related experiences suffered by women.
Nollywood-Inspired Migrant Filmmaking in Switzerland
This book introduces the emerging, but still little-known, phenomenon of Nollywood-inspired filmmaking by African migrants in Europe. Using the unique example of a performance ethnographic case study in Switzerland, it shows how members of the African diaspora represent themselves through audio-visual media and what influence the post-colonial images of the Nigerian video film industry have on their image production. Drawing on Jean Rouch’s Shared Anthropology and the methods of Performance Ethnography, this book provides an in-depth look at the complexity of migrants’ everyday lives and showcases Nollywood-inspired transnational filmmaking practices. In its refreshing and accessible writing style, it also illustrates the performance ethnographic research process, highlights the pitfalls and challenges of collaborative film projects, and critically engages with fundamental questions of social research in decolonial settings.
Was sagt die Kunst?
Welche Einsichten und Überlegungen kommen auf, wenn Kunst und Wissenschaft im Kontext einer Universität aufeinandertreffen? In Anschluss an den Band »Was spricht das Bild?« (2011) stellen Kunstwissenschaftler*innen 19 künstlerische Positionen vor, die den Ausgangspunkt für teils überraschende Beiträge von Philosoph*innen, Theolog*innen und Vertreter*innen weiterer Disziplinen bilden. Dieser interdisziplinäre Zugang erschließt neue Perspektiven und Reflexionsfelder zeitgenössischer Kunst. Der Text-Bild-Band bildet den Abschluss der langjährigen Ausstellungsreihe »Im Vorbeigehen« an der Katholischen Privat-Universität Linz.
Der Geschundene Mensch
Die Schriftenreihe Notizen zu Uecker macht die Forschungsergebnisse der StipendiatInnen des Günther Uecker Instituts der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Der Akzent der geförderten Projekte liegt auf einer lebendigen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Günther Ueckers. Den Auftakt bildet die Untersuchung der Kunsthistorikerin und Historikerin für den Nahen Osten und Turkologie, Katrin Nahidi. Sie analysiert die Arbeit Gerät (auf Wörtern) von Uecker, die im Rahmen des Werkkomplexes Der geschundene Mensch (1992/93) entstand. Zentral ist dabei die begriffliche Verbindung von Konzeptkunst und Historienmalerei zum ,konzeptuellen Historienbild'. Nahidi beleuchtet so die Ausstellungsgeschichte dieses Werkes und daran angebunden, wie es kulturpolitisch und interkulturell Wirkung entfaltet. Diese Publikation dokumentiert die Übersichtsausstellung Shirin Neshat. Frauen in Gesellschaft in der Kunsthalle Tübingen (2017). Sie führt wichtige Werke aus allen Schaffensphasen von Shirin Neshat zusammen, von den berühmten ikonischen Schriftfotografien der Serie Women of Allah über die vielfach prämierten Single- und Multi-Channel-Videoinstallationen bis hin zu monumentalen Werkblöcken wie The Book of Kings sowie Neuproduktionen der Jahre 2016/2017, die zuvor noch nicht in Europa zu sehen waren. Der programmatische Ausstellungstitel Frauen in Gesellschaft beschreibt dabei zwei wiederkehrende Themen im uvre der Künstlerin: einerseits die Rolle der Frau in islamischen Gesellschafte...
