Advances in Machine Vision

This book describes recent strategies and applications for extracting useful information from sensor data. For example, the methods presented by Roth and Levine are becoming widely accepted as the ?best? way to segment range images, and the neural network methods for Alpha-numeric character recognition, presented by K Yamada, are believed to be the best yet presented. An applied system to analyze the images of dental imprints presented by J C“t‚, et al. is one of several examples of image processing systems that have already been proven to be practical, and can serve as a model for the image processing system designer. Important aspects of the automation of processes are presented in a practical way which can provide immediate new capabilities in fields as diverse as biomedical image processing, document processing, industrial automation, understanding human perception, and the defence industries. The book is organized into sections describing Model Driven Feature Extraction, Data Driven Feature Extraction, Neural Networks, Model Building, and Applications.

Questioning Science in East Asian Contexts brings together twelve essays written by Yung Sik Kim addressing various questions about the social and cultural contexts of science in East Asia. Most of the essays deal with the relationship between science and Confucianism, especially the roles that Confucian thought, values, and institutions have on the development of science. Kim shows that this relationship is very complex and multifaceted, and cannot be dealt with in a simplistic manner. Kim offers comparative perspectives and discusses the problems of intercultural comparisons; he demonstrates that in spite of the potential dangers that accompany these comparisons, they should be made nonetheless as they allow for a better understanding of the situation in East Asia.

The Horoscope

"This week, someone will make you very angry. Give in to your inner feelings...kill them. No one will catch you." Like a seed planted, the idea began to sprout across the city. A newspaper is intended to inform, to speak the truth. No one expects it to incite to murder. When the words above are printed in Tokyo's most widely circulated journal, one seemingly normal Sunday morning, a string of crimes ensues. As investigators scramble to merely keep up with the heightened work load, they are almost blinded to the underlying cause. An ex-convict, betrayed by the press years before, is seeking revenge by destroying their reputation in the most bloody, indirect way his sick mind can imagine. If h...

Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography

The Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography, the first publication of its kind since 1898, is the work of more than one hundred internationally recognized experts from nearly a dozen countries. It has been designed to satisfy the growing thirst of students, researchers, professionals, and general readers for knowledge about China. It makes the entire span of Chinese history manageable by introducing the reader to emperors, politicians, poets, writers, artists, scientists, explorers, and philosophers who have shaped and transformed China over the course of five thousand years. In 135 entries, ranging from 1,000 to 8,000 words and written by some of the world's leading China scholars, the Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography takes the reader from the important (even if possibly mythological) figures of ancient China to Communist leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. The in-depth essays provide rich historical context, and create a compelling narrative that weaves abstract concepts and disparate events into a coherent story. Cross-references between the articles show the connections between times, places, movements, events, and individuals.

Korea and the Others

This book intends to be a reaction to a remarkable paradox within Korean studies, easily encountered even by non-experts. While many Korean studies journals strongly encourage the submission of "multicultural" and "transnational" articles, in fact, very few scholars in the world are able to receipt this message. The volume analyzes various episodes of confrontation, both "physical" and "cultural", between the people of Korea and foreign counterparts (i.e.: the "others") in various historical moments. It was devised and born within the Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) Project entitled Collectio, collatio, connectio, which is sponsored by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea and is curre...
