Sample Book Insights: #1 The story of Fannie Lou Hamer, a Black woman from Mississippi, illustrates the contributions of a Black woman with limited material resources and little formal education, but an all-consuming passion for social justice. #2 Hamer was a field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a civil rights organization, in 1962. That year, she learned about her constitutional rights as a citizen of the United States for the first time.
