Lethal Spoils

In May 1940 Panzer columns overran France. Many of it's citizens wept at the debacle brought about by their government and it's inept military leaders. Following the defection of the cabinet from Paris, the writing was clearly on the wall. It had taken only five weeks for the 'Blitzkrieg' to overwhelm the vaunted French forces. The world was stunned by the event. Many people spend years searching for bonanzas while a few simply stumble across them. 'LETHAL SPOILS' focuses on a sensational treasure secreted by a French aristocrat ahead of the advancing invaders. The dying words of an old man guide two German soldiers, Sgt. Frieburg and his younger companion to it's recovery.Neither soldier is...

A companion volume to Canadian Odyssey: A Reading of Hugh Hood's The New Age, God's Plenty surveys the short fiction of the writer dubbed Canada's Proust. Hugh Hood, an unparalleled stylist, was equally accomplished in short forms and long: this straight-talking assessment of Hood's stories is thorough, insightful, readable, and profound. With its story-by-story breakdown and rigorous engagement with Hood's technique, God's Plenty offers an excellent introduction not just to an undersung master, but to the art of short fiction full stop. W.J. Keith is a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto.

In November 1969, what Time Magazine called the "largest battle of the year" took place less than two miles from the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone. Three companies of Task Force 1-61 met 2,000-3,000 North Vietnamese. American forces fought for two days, inflicting heavy casualties and suffering eight killed. Late on November 12, it became evident that the American position could be overrun. Alpha Company was airlifted in darkness to reinforce a small hill in the jungle. Three hours later, well past midnight, the Americans were attacked by 1,500 NVA. There was a twist: A secret Vietcong document captured near Saigon urged intense action before November 14 in anticipation of the Vietnam War Moratorium Demonstrations set for November 15 in many cities in America. The Vietcong planned to inflict a stunning defeat in "an effort to get the fighting in step with the peace marchers." The author, a member of Alpha Company who rode in on the last helicopter, offers unique insights into the story of the men who fought those three days in 1969.

The subject of leadership raises many questions: What is it? How does it differ from management and command? Are leaders born or bred? Who are the leaders? Do we actually need leaders? Inevitably, the answers are provocative and partial; leadership is a hugely important topic of debate. There are constant calls for 'greater' or 'stronger' leadership, but what this actually means, how we can evaluate it, and why it's important are not very clear. In this Very Short Introduction Keith Grint prompts the reader to rethink their understanding of what leadership is. He examines the way leadership has evolved from its earliest manifestations in ancient societies, highlighting the beginnings of lead...

Playing With Fire

After discovering her fiancé has been unfaithful Carrie flees to Sicily for a holiday, where she meets octogenarian Millie and a local Sicilian, Enzo. Enzo appears to be following Carrie as she tours around the island. Is he smitten, as Millie maintains, or does he have criminal intentions, as suggested by another of her fellow travellers? And if so, is he responsible for a recent spate of antiquities’ burglaries? Or is he searching for Excalibur, the legendary sword rumoured to be lost in Sicily, a sword forged by the ancient Roman blacksmith, Vulcan, god of fire? The two new friends decide to investigate, and Carrie unwittingly provides an important clue. However, their amusement palls when the adventure takes an unpleasant turn as someone, it seems, is playing with fire. If it’s not the sword, can they discover just what it is that people are hunting, and uncover the truth about Enzo before someone else gets hurt?

Gilbert Keith Chesterton, (29 May 1874 - 14 June 1936), better known as G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, lay theologian, biographer, and literary and art critic. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox". Time magazine has observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories--first carefully turning them inside out." Chesterton is well known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and for his reasoned apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognised the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man.Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both Progressivism and Conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes
