The Brain-Behavioral Connection in Substance Use Disorders and Effects Associated with Injectable Opioid Prescription

The conception of substance dependence as a complex brain disorder calls into question folk-psychological views on the voluntary control of behavior and challenges the popular theory of Cartesian dualism. Although brain abnormalities in substance dependence have long been suspected, only in recent years has research begun to more clearly delineate brain alterations, correlating with measurable changes in behavior. However, no characteristic change has been found and the research findings are equivocal. On the other hand, the brain-behavioral connection in substance dependence offers insight into novel therapeutic approaches and helps to remove the pejorative undertone that often surrounds individuals with opioid or other substance dependence.

Dual Diagnosis

Co-morbidity of substance abuse and mental illness is among the most prevalent mental disorders worldwide and places an enormous burden on individuals and society. This book begins with a historical overview of the conceptual issues behind dual diagnosis and presents recent developments in conceptualization and treatment. Several reviews evaluate the latest etiological theories on the association of mental illness with substance use disorders. One chapter deals with genetic and behavioral aspects by looking at twin studies. The link between alcohol use and mental disorders, the role of a pre-existing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder on the development of substance use disorders, the contribution of substance abuse to neurocognitive impairments as well as various assessment options are also discussed. Finally, the model of the 'modified therapeutic communities' as an emerging modality for the provision of integrated treatment is presented. This topical and outstanding collection of articles provides an excellent overview over the stimulating scientific research that is currently taking place in the field of dual diagnosis.

Provides a detailed look at how war affects human life and health far beyond the battlefield Since 2010, a team of activists, social scientists, and physicians have monitored the lives lost as a result of the US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan through an initiative called the Costs of War Project. Unlike most studies of war casualties, this research looks beyond lives lost in violence to consider those who have died as a result of illness, injuries, and malnutrition that would not have occurred had the war not taken place. Incredibly, the Cost of War Project has found that, of the more than 1,000,000 lives lost in the recent US wars, a minimum of 800,000 died not from violence, but f...

Habitus and Drug Using Environments

Informed by the thought of Pierre Bourdieu and framed by the philosophy of harm reduction, Habitus and Drug Using Environments provides a sociological analysis of public environments affected by injecting drug use. Drawing on ethnographic research across several locations, this book offers a qualitative and phenomenological account of the social organisation of public settings used for the preparation and administration of illicit drugs, informed by interviews with both injecting drug users and those whose employment is directly affected by public injecting drug use. With attention to current policy-related questions concerning the lived experience of ‘place’ upon the health of injecting...
