Howard Baker

"A brilliant and perceptive look at an intellectually gifted and multitalented man. In our increasingly partisan and fragmented political system, Howard Baker's legacy stands as a symbol of the way things should be: He sought consensus and compromise where partisans wanted to fight rather than govern. And he insisted that civility must be part of our character lest we surrender to the evils of spite and recrimination." --Senator William S. Cohen, R-Maine "Lee Annis's volume is a wonderful book about a man who all of his life has worked to give public service a good name. No one in politics is more respected than Howard Baker. This is a timely read in an age when there is so much cynicism abo...

In this series of intricately related texts, internationally known poet, critic, and performance artist David Antin explores the experience of time how it's felt, remembered, and recounted. These free-form talk pieces sometimes called talk poems or simply talks began as improvisations at museums, universities, and poetry centers where Antin was invited to come and think out loud. Serious and playful, they move rapidly from keen analysis to powerful storytelling to passages of pure comedy, as they range kaleidoscopically across Antin's experiences: in the New York City of his childhood and youth, the Eastern Europe of family and friends, and the New York and Southern California of his art and literary career. The author's analysis and abrasive comedy have been described as a mix of Lenny Bruce and Ludwig Wittgenstein, his commitment to verbal invention and narrative as a fusion of Mark Twain and Gertrude Stein. Taken together, these pieces provide a rich oral history of and critical context for the evolution of the California art scene from the 1960s onward."

Many are familiar with Jackie Robinson and the integration of Major League Baseball after all the years of separate black and white leagues, but fewer people know of the segregation and then integration of the National Football League. The timing and sequence of events were different, but football followed a pattern similar to that of baseball in regard to the beginning and end of racial segregation. This work traces professional football's movement from segregation to integration, beginning with a discussion of the various reasons why the game was first segregated. It describes the schemes that NFL owners came up with to ban African Americans from the league in the 1930s and 1940s, and tells how these barriers broke down after World War II. The author considers how professional football overcame the legacies of Jim Crow and how Jim Crow laws may still haunt the game.
