Applied equine nutrition and training

This book contains specialised information on the nutrition and training of the horse. Practical hints can be drawn from studies showing how apes indicate to us plants which have medicinal properties that can then be applied to equine treatment and also have an effect in nutraceuticals. Overviews are given on the potential of total mixed rations for the future of horse feeding and the practical feeding of obese horses and ponies. Nutrition considerations are given to avoid medical conditions. Methods used for performance diagnosis and training guidance of human athletes are applied here to equine management. In addition, training techniques which reduce the risk of back injury in the horse are explored and a review of the riders interaction with the horse is provided. Practical nutritional information acquired through research is applied to all aspects of managing endurance racehorses. Finally, expanded abstracts of original research are provided in very diverse fields of nutrition and training of horses. All those concerned with training, riding and feeding in the equine industry will benefit from the contents.

This volume summarizes the proceedings of the Reisensburg workshop which took place at Reisensburg Castle in November 1997". The castle is built on the site of an - cient Roman compound and situated in the south of Germany at the Danube river. Sci- tists from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, Switzerland, and the United States participated in the workshop. Like the 1996 workshop, the proceedings of which will be published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Ex- cise in 1998, the 1997 workshop also focused on the topic of overtraining in its widest sense to deepen our knowledge in this particularly sensitive field of sports science and sports p...

Eicosanoids and Other Bioactive Lipids in Cancer, Inflammation and Radiation Injury

Eicosanoids and Other Bioactive Lipids in Cancer, Inflammation and Radiation Injury

In recent decades eicosanoids have been attracting an increasing amount of attention as a result of their important physiological roles in many areas of biology and medicine. The eicosanoids comprise the prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes and are products of arachidonic acid, an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid stored in tissue phospholipids. Disturbances of eicosanoids and their metabolic products play a regulatory role in many types of cell injuries and diseases. One of the most exciting areas of eicosanoid research pinpoints their participation in the control of cell proliferation and differentiation. Eicosanoids form a link between different fields of research into such areas as cancer, inflammation and radiation-induced injury. This link provided the impetus for the development of the conference series of which the present volume represents the proceedings of the Second International Conference, held in Berlin in October 1991.

Magnetic Resonance in Experimental and Clinical Oncology

Over the past decade, techniques have been developed and implemented to observe metabolism noninvasively in localized regions of intact, living experimental animals and humans through the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). At the same time, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques developed in the 1970s and refined in this decade have been increasingly applied as a powerful clinical tool to probe human anatomy. Because of the unusual metabolic and physiologic characteristics of malignant tissues, oncology has been one of the primary focuses of the application of both MRS and MRI. Although considerable progress has been made in oncologic applications of magnetic resonance (MR), ...

Lactation: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume II, Biosynthesis and Secretion of Milk/Diseases, is part of a three-volume treatise containing a total of 28 chapters. The present volume is devoted to the functioning of the mammary gland in the synthesis and secretion of milk. Emphasis has been placed on studies which have described on a biochemical and molecular basis the operation of the pathways and structures involved in the biosynthesis of milk in the functional secretory cells of the mammary gland and the diseases of lactation that can affect them. The volume is organized into two parts. Part I on the biosynthesis of milk covers topics such as the general metabolism associated with the synthesis of milk; biosynthesis of milk fat and milk proteins; biochemistry of lactose and related carbohydrates; and cell structure relating to the formation and secretion of milk. Part II on diseases of the mammary gland and lactation includes studies on the clinical endocrinology of prolactin, microbial diseases of the mammary gland, ketosis, and mouse mammary tumors.
