Between Harmony and Discrimination explores the varying expressions of religious practices and the intertwined, shifting interreligious relationships of the peoples of Bali and Lombok. As religion has become a progressively more important identity marker in the 21st century, the shared histories and practices of peoples of both similar and differing faiths are renegotiated, reconfirmed or reconfigured. This renegotiation, inspired by Hindu or Islamic reform movements that encourage greater global identifications, has created situations that are perceived locally to oscillate between harmony and discrimination depending on the relationships and the contexts in which they are acting. Religious belonging is increasingly important among the Hindus and Muslims of Bali and Lombok; minorities (Christians, Chinese) on both islands have also sought global partners. Reclaiming Adat
In the early 1990s, the animist and Hindu traces in adat, or Malay custom, became contentious for resurgent Islam in Malaysia. Reclaiming Adat focuses on the filmmakers, intellectuals, and writers who reclaimed adat to counter the homogenizing aspects of both Islamic discourse and globalization in this period. They practised their project of recuperation with an emphasis on sexuality and a return to archaic forms such as magic and traditional healing. Using close textual readings of literature and film, Khoo Gaik Cheng reveals the tensions between gender, modernity, and nation. Khoo weaves a wealth of cultural theory into a rare analysis of Malay cinema and the work of new Malaysian anglophone writers. Reclaiming Adat makes an essential contribution to our knowledge of the complexities embedded in modern Malaysian culture, politics, and identity.
B-SPACE 2019
We are delighted to introduce the 2019 Brawijaya International Conference on Social and Political Sciences (B-SPACE). The aim of B-SPACE (Brawijaya International Conference on Social and Political Sciences) is to provide a platform for various stakeholders, varying from professionals, researchers, and academicians from across the world to present their scientific take and research results on social and political matters. The theme of B-SPACE 2019 was “Gender & Digital Society 4.0”. The amount of participants registered on the initial phase was 140. However, BSPACE 2019 cumulatively consisted of 79 scientific papers, presented orally by the respective authors during the two-day-conference. The oral presentation sessions were opened for the public, allowing a productive interaction between the presenters and the audience where knowledge and information were further shared. Aside from the opportunity to present them in front of an audience, the submitted scientific papers are processed to be published in EAI/EUDL proceedings.
