Abstract: Der Verfasser gibt zunächst einen Überblick über die Klassen- und Sozialstruktur der Land- und Stadtbevölkerung in Sachsen seit der Frühen Neuzeit. Er diskutiert im folgenden das zentrale Problem der sozialen und demographischen Herkunft des Proletariats, skizziert Veränderungen in der Struktur der Landbevölkerung und analysiert den Grad der gesellschaftlichen Arbeitsteilung und sozialen Differenzierung. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden Prozesse der sozialen und räumlichen Mobilität diskutiert. Ein besonderes Interesse bei der Untersuchung der Herkunft des städtischen Proletariats gilt der Binnenwanderung der Jahre 1780 bis 1870.
