Youth Cultures in a Globalized World
This book examines the relation between the phenomenon of globalization, changes in the lifeworld of young people and the development of specific youth cultures. It explores the social, political, economic and cultural impact of globalization on young people. Growing diversity in their lifeworlds, technological development, migration and the ubiquity of digital communication and representation of the world open up new forms of self-representation, networking and political expression, which are described and discussed in the book. Other topics are the impact of globalization on work and economy, global environmental issues such as climate change, political movements which put “nationalism first”, change of youth`s values and the significance of body, gender and beauty. The book highlights the challenges of young people in modern life, as well as the way in which they express themselves and engage in society – in culture, politics, work and social life.
Power in Language, Culture, Literature and Education
In one of the contributions to this edited volume an interviewee argues that "English is power". For researchers in the field of English Studies this raises the questions of where the power of English resides and which types and practices of power are implied in the uses of English. Linguists, scholars of literature and culture, and language educators address aspects of these questions in a wide range of contributions. The book shows that the power of English can oscillate between empowerment and subjection, on the one hand enabling humans to develop manifold capabilities and on the other constraining their scope of action and reflection. Logics in Artificial Intelligence
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 17th European Conference on Logics in Artificial Intelligence, JELIA 2021, held as a virtual event, in May 2021. The 27 full papers and 3 short papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 68 submissions. The accepted papers span a number of areas within Logics in AI, including: argumentation; belief revision; reasoning about actions, causality, and change; constraint satisfaction; description logics and ontological reasoning; non-classical logics; and logic programming (answer set programming).
Computers Helping People with Special Needs
This book consitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs, ICCHP 2004, held in Paris, France in July 2004. The 172 revised contributions presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers evaluate how various fields in computer science can contribute to helping people with various kinds of disabilities. Software Re-use, Utrecht 1989
In November 1989 we organised a workshop on software re-use, inviting members of the leading research teams across Europe. In retrospect, we realise that we missed a few research teams out, but nevertheless we did have a very fruitful workshop. This book is the outcome of that meeting. Prior to the workshop, teams submitted short position papers, and at the workshop made very short presentations of these. Most of the time was spent in four parallel sessions, and the reports of these sessions are given in Chapter 2.
