In Spiritus Loci Bert Daelemans, who graduated as an architect and a theologian, provides an interdisciplinary method for the theological assessment of church architecture. Rather than a theory, this method is based on case studies of contemporary buildings (1995-2015), which are often criticized for lacking theological depth. In a threefold method, the author brings to light the ways in which architecture can be theology – or theotopy – by focusing on topoi (places) rather than logoi (words). Churches reveal our relationship with God by engaging our body, mind, and community. This method proves relevant not only for the way we perceive these buildings, but also for the way we use them, especially in our prophetic engagement for a better world.

Phenomenologies of the City: Studies in the History and Philosophy of Architecture brings architecture and urbanism into dialogue with phenomenology. Phenomenology has informed debate about the city from social sciences to cultural studies. Within architecture, however, phenomenological inquiry has been neglecting the question of the city. Addressing this lacuna, this book suggests that the city presents not only the richest, but also the politically most urgent horizon of reference for philosophical reflection on the cultural and ethical dimensions of architecture. The contributors to this volume are architects and scholars of urbanism. Some have backgrounds in literature, history, religiou...

Polish Architecture in Contemporary Innovation

Authored by two architects, Polish Architecture in Contemporary Innovation: Thoughts, Dreams and Places tells a story of buildings that were built in Poland between 1980 and 2020, as architecture developed in the Western world and Japan. Its main focus is public utility buildings which the authors “have touched” in situ and which have moved them or sparked their interest. The book is divided into three parts: • Part I focuses on the problem of creating and shaping architectural form and uses examples of both international and Polish architecture. In this section, the authors pose the question: why is the Pritzker Prize so important? • Part II attempts to answer the question of how ar...

Open/close

"In this first volume in the SCALE series, "Open / Close', a simple yet significant part of any building - the "opening" - is illustrated in all its different aspects, from idea to implementation. As well as the different types of component-windows, doors, gates, loggias, filters-this volume deals with bu.ldinq structures. It is also concerned with the significance of the "opening in building design. Openings define the relationship between a bullding and the space outside it, helping to characterize a location. In this book, all of the elements that mediate between interior and exterior spaces are classified both in terms of construction and design. Each of them is described and dealt With indetail. All the internationally renowned projects used here as examples are both practical and generally applicable. The projects have not beenchosed for their homogeneous architectural language, but for the high quality of their architecture." --Book Jacket.

Whilst our outside world is modifying into a more complex and hybrid networked world, our most intimate dwelling, our home, is at risk of falling behind as for many it seems to have remained the same as it has been for many decades. This book explores what it means to have a home in such a networked world. It describes what architecture can, or perhaps should, contribute to enable a more participatory role for inhabitants. This forward-thinking book will try to answer the question - What is the role and position of technology in our most intimate locations both now and what could it be like in the future?
