’Long live liberty, equality, fraternity and dynamite’ So went the traditional slogan of the radical liberals in Greater Swabia, the south-western part of modern Germany. This book investigates the development of what the author terms ’popular liberalism’ in this region, in order to present a more nuanced understanding of political and cultural patterns in Germany up to the early 1930s. In particular, the author offers an explanation for the success of National Socialism before 1933 in certain regions of South Germany, arguing that the radical liberal sub-culture was not subsumed by the Nazi Party, but instead changed its form of representation. Together with the famous völkish frac...
The subjective term region and its theoretical implications are considered in the opening chapters of this text. The empirical section ranges in time from the appearance of the German stern duchies in the Middle Ages to cross-border co-operation in the Oder are today, and geographically from Baden-Wurttemberg in the west to Transylvania, Carpatho-Ruthenia and the Kalingrad enclave in the east. The contributors to the text highlight the complex problems of local identity and the centrality of culture in shaping notions of the region.
Tort law is one of the core areas of European private law, in particular in the field of business law. However, it often receives less attention than the well-known and widely published developments in the field of European contract law. In order to direct more attention to this important subject, an intensive Round Table discussion on the subject of the evolution of torts in European business law was held. The contributions to this volume reflect the results of the research undertaken by renowned European scholars and practitioners on central aspects such as competition law, company law and intellectual property. Each contribution particularly focuses upon the overarching tendencies and principles within the individual aspect of tort law, thereby directing attention to the future at European level of this essential area of private law. Readership: Lawyers, academics, legal departments, judges, legal professionals concerned with torts in European business law.
Notwithstanding its contemporary critics, political representation remains at the core of democratic politics. Based on a comparative research project that gathered data from observations, surveys, experiments and expert interviews, this book examines the process and the quality of political representation in France and Germany from a dual perspective. First, it analyzes MPs’ behavior during their district activities. Second, it investigates the perceptions and evaluations of the represented, the French and German citizens. In ten chapters different facets of MPs’ activities as well as citizens’ attitudes are comparatively investigated. The book is relevant for Politics scholars and practitioners at national parliaments to better understand representative democracies, and it may also contribute to improve representation itself.
This volume, first in the Yale Research Series of Boswell's journals, covers his emotionally eventful travels as a young man through the German and Swiss territories. It begins in mid-June 1764 and ends on New Year's Day 1765, when he crossed the Alps for the next stages of his European tour in Italy, Corsica, and France. The volume includes the complete text of Boswell's diaries and memoranda, as well as a daily record of expenses and his frequently revealing "Ten Lines a Day" poems. This volume is the Research Series parallel to the 1953 trade series edition, Boswell on the Grand Tour: Germany and Switzerland, 1764, whose annotation the editor, Marlies K. Danziger, expands, supplements, and, in many instances, corrects.
Taxes are a fundamental element of modern industrial societies and affect every citizen. Today's tax regimes are historical constructions that reflect a nation's political traditions, but they are also shaped by political, intellectual, and economic trends that transcend national boundaries. From a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, this collection of essays addresses the relationship between taxes, citizenship, and state-building in Germany and the United States from the 18th to the early 20th century. Leading scholars of history and economics from both sides of the Atlantic provide insight into the development of the modern fiscal state and the relationship between taxation, tax protests, and political representation. Methodologically, the book will be regarded as a first approach towards a transnational history of modern taxation. The collection will be of interest to those who deal with questions of state-building, the development of the civil society, the relationship between the individual and the state, and the historical dimensions of taxation.
